whats a LPN to do?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

So its pretty sad out there so far for the job search. Hospitals only hire a few LPN'S. Doctors office...well they want at least one year experience. The nursing homes are full. I just put a resume in at a cardio office because it said, "new grads welcome" and my sister who does work in a doctors office told me that all the girls in her office said to stay clear of that place. They said they go through LPN's like crazy because they abuse their LPN's in a verbal way. They said they will call you stupid right to your face..YIKES...I would not think that was legal. Now if they call I don't know what to do?????I have a few more places to try but I had no idea it would be this hard. My age does not help either..I am 18. I am not giving up and of course I hope someone will take a chance on me but it does get frustrating :o

Its a family practice with very long office hours. 7AM to 10PM. They most likely need help in the evenings and I am good with that. I plan on dressing older and don't have any facial piercings. I do have a belly ring but they won't see that :lol2:

I really want this job but just have to keep the faith that if the good Lord wants me to have it then it will happen. I guess I think my age is a problem because when I was in school I had an instructor that treated me like gold. Then one day another student brought up that I was only 17. Well that freaked the instructor out and she wanted to know how I got into the program. She never treated me the same after that. She was harder on me than any other student. I was blessed enough to have the director tell her that I was more mature than most of the girls in the class as I refused to become involved with the drama that sometimes went on in our class. I am not saying this to sound conceited but I just want to do my job without the backstabbing. We are all suppose to be on the same team :)

p.s.

any advice on questions they might ask and good answers I might respond with????

I don't think you blew it, like another poster said, it probably was because that was the time the doctor had before he started seeing patients. Good luck!

Hi Jean333,

Have you thought about a follow-up letter concerning your resue with the cards? I found working in this area, so many people willing to teach, my employer sent me to many specialty classes and I ended up working in their stress lab, which was great. With a job that close, I would do as Commuter suggested and find out who you need to talk to and go into the office. Show an interest, I have found that always to my benefit. Good Luck in your search!:balloons:

Advice please. I have an interview with a large family practice tomorrow. I was thrilled to get the interview. Today I got another call, a cardiologist office called me to set up an interview in a week. Lets say the very best happens and I get offered the job tomorrow do I take it or go for the cardiologist interview. And of course there is no guarantee that I will get the cardiologist job. I am also undecided as to what kind of office I want to work in. Would love to hear your thoughts???? Where would you rather work? At least things are looking up and I am getting calls ;)

p.s. now i just got another call to work at a hospital. Its a veterans hospital and I have another interview.

It looks like jobs are now coming to you like rain drops! What I would probably do is this; most jobs ask when can you start, and I would probably say a week and a half for both of them (giving you time to go to both interviews), and take the one that I like better (or maybe what pays more...whatever your thing is). Unless, of course, it the family practice job is attractive, and they are pressuring you to start Monday coming.

Hard to say, which one is better, because the family practice should have a catch all for all patients, until they are diagnosed and referred elsewhere (such as the cardiologist). However the cardiologist may teach a great deal about all of the cardiac issues, and if you are going to become an RN, cardiac is a BIG subject to cover in med-surg. You would have an edge. Good luck! You have choices, now, it seems!

A week ago I had nothing now I have 3. I guess I am hoping that they don't offer me the job on the spot(I doubt that would happen anyway) and tell them I need to give a weeks notice to my other job. I had all the thoughts you wrote me. I would learn so much from a cardio office but the family practice happens to be affiliated with one of the best hospitals in my area who happens to have a TOP nursing program. Then there is the VA hospital. I would be working for the government and they have great benefits plus money for school. I have heard it can be a bit rough at the hospital but for the most part have heard great things. The doctors office is no weekends or holidays, I like that. Who knows maybe none of them will offer me a job then I will be right back to the drawing board. Choices are great but they can be hard too:) I know I need to pray for direction. Thanks sooooo much for all your help!

Anything affiliated with a hospital sounds like a win-win to me, because maybe you can transfer to other clinics, and they may have a cardiologist there. Also, they may have better medical and prescription benefits than the cardiologist's office, especially, if the cardiologist's office stands alone. I am trying to get into the VA hospital myself once I do about two more years where I am currently working. And, if you plan to become an RN, it may be better to get to the clinic that is connected to the hospital. They may pay your way. Good luck! I know choices are hard, but they are also better than empty baskets!

Had my interview at the family practice. It went VERY well and I am pretty sure I am going to get offered the job. They spent 2 hours with me. Its a large doctors office, 30 beds. It felt more like a mini hospital. I have another interview Monday at the Veterans hospital and I all ready got an e-mail from them saying they are looking forward to meeting me. This is going to be so hard, I just wish I knew the right job for me. I also have a job interview at a cardio office but don't feel as confused about that one. I know its going to come down between the hospital or family practice.

Don't let your age, get in the way. Stand tall and proud and with confidance. Your 18 and have your LPN you should be proud of that. U had to do the same work as anyone else to get your LPN. I work with the VA here in UTAH and have worked at the Tucson VA in AZ, it would be a great spot for you if your looking to get into it. Great bennys and if you are looking to get your RN there are a ton of options for you. Keep your head up and something will come your way. GL

Hi,

do you have any insurance companies near you? Such as Aetna, first health or travelers. I live in Dallas and I know for sure Aetna hires LVN's starting around 45,000

I am curious. What does an LPN do for an insurance company? I have had one interview that went really well but have not been offered the job. They told me that they would give me a few days to think about it and call me next week. I just hope they meant it and I really hear from them. Another worry is they do not know I am 18. I know this because they never asked and I was never asked to fill out an application. They just asked for my SS card and LPN License. The women was really nice and told me about the fun Christmas party they have every year and they have open bar. So I know she thinks I am at least 21. Should I have told them? My next interview is tomorrow at a VA Hospital and I have another on Wed at a Cardio office. I really want the first job though. I hope I hear soon because if I get offered jobs at the other two places I don't want to insult them by saying that I am waiting to hear back from another job. What should I say if I get offered the other jobs? How do I stall for time and not insult them. I don't want to burn my bridges. ADVICE PLEASE!!!!!

Jean
