I would start applying to other schools.

If you were the 1st or 2nd alternate on the list, you would still have a solid chance of being admitted into this school in the event that someone drops during the first few weeks. However, there are 7 alternates in front of you who will be called first in the event that someone drops out. If these 7 alternates are not interested or have moved onto other schools, then you would be asked to fill the dropped spot. It is unlikely that all 7 people will no longer be interested in a newly available opening.

Call and ask them how large the intake class is and if being on the alternate list places you at the top of next semesters intake.

Having said that you would be surprised at how many people don't show up for the first day of classes. My intake was supposed to be 80 and 72 showed up. By the end of the first week we were down to 67 and a few new faces suddenly showed up.

So, I would call the school and ask.
