Prior HM with a few questions

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

A little back story before I ask my question: I have been ad for 6 years now and am just getting back to ward time after a few long years with the Marines. Im currently stationed in california and plan to challenge the LVN board here locally. I am originally from wisconsin and would like to transfer my cert from one state to another. this is a time sensitive topic because if I cannot transfer my accreditation from state to state then there is no point in me staying in any longer in my opinion. Anyone with any enlightening information on the topic please send your knowledge my way. Thank you for your time.

Here's my real question >>>>

*Just to be clear I am only a hs grad with no official schooling for this LVN cert (other than corps school and fmf training) that I would receive after challenging the board. I'm told for this reason I would not be able to take my skills and practice in any other state except california. Even if I apply and meet the requirements the state will turn me down because I didn't sit in a classroom and learn by reading a certain schools books and take their tests. Is this true??*

I would look on the California BON website, I would call them to clarify if there is a question.

Man that is a tough one....even RN's have to reapply to each state to see if their education is up to the state standards. These standards vary state to state. Each state will approve/disapprove based on the individual requirements. If a state allows the teat to be challenged they may amke you challenge thier exam. I think you need to ask the CA BON or call another state

California LVN by challenge is not transferable to other states. This is very clear on the BVNPT website. However there are only two other states (NY & WVa)that will accept military training as equivalent to LPN training. Last I saw only NY, CA, and WVa allow military corpsman to challenge the LPN exam however this license is not transferable/endorsable to other states and is only valid single state unless one graduates from a school of practical nursing. If you get a single state LPN license you can work in a VA hospital in any state with the license (I.e have a CA LVN license and work in WI VA facility)

But to answer your question if you challenge the LVN in CA by equivalent military training CA BVNPT is very clear that this license is only valid in CA and not endorsable to other states. The license is not valid for certain facilities in CA that by regulation require LVNs to be graduates of a school of vocational nursing
