Nurses LPN/LVN

When you guys went through your LPN/LVN program and did your clinicals, where did you do them? Did you only rotate through LTC facilities? Or did you rotate through a hospital as well? Did you receive any Pediactrics, OB/GYN, ER clinical rotation? And what state are you? Thank you for all your help, just trying to get a general consensus of what everyone did in their particular program.

I'm in Ohio and did my clinicals ( in 1982) in one LTC, one facility for adults with disabilities, and a hospital where we did rotations in ER, OR, OB, Neuro/ortho, Med/surg, ICU, CCU, including the stepdown units, and Peds.

I did med surg in Cleveland clinic and southwest. I also did two days in southwest for ob/gyn then three weeks in grace hospital its like ltc but in a hospital. Peds I was supposed to do like a headstart for a day and two days in a hospital but Mrs Puff the blow fish didnt like my skills so I.couldnt pass ltc rotation.

I looked up different schools and they do things very differently in ohio tho

My program did all clinicals in LTC. We did 1 clinical in the hospital post partum unit which was short and really did not include very much learning/experience. We also did 1 short clinical at a elementary school. Everything else was LTC.

3 different hospitals on M/S, LTC, ER, Skilled facility, school, daycare and OB/post partum and assisted living. The LTC and skilled facility were the longest, 3 shifts per week for 4 weeks each. That was quite some time ago, in Massachusetts.

Be prepared to write out a number of care plans. LPN's classically do not initiate care plans, just follow them--but in school it is a different story.

I would also suggest writing out med cards. You really need to know your meds. And if able, look at the chart of the people you will be caring for--see their picture (as often in LTC name bands are not on residents) and HOW they take their meds. (crushed in medium of choice, for instance).

Take advantage of every opportunity you can for clinical skills.

My LPN school was over 8 years ago, so I don't exactly remember. We did have clinicals at a LTC/SNF, and Portsmouth Naval Hospital for med/surg, Peds, OB, psych(barely), ER, and Oncology. We had class 5 days a week and possibly had clinicals 2 times a week. The RNs did the care plans. I have however, made changes to care plans. Things are done so differently at each school.

I went through PN school many moons ago(2004-2005) as well; I rotated through LTC, hospitals (Med Surg, Vent Unit) OB (delivery and well baby units), Interventional Radiology and ER.

To add: Peds was Pediatric Procedure and Clinic.

I also rotated through the OR as well.
