I was fired today (I think??)

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

So long story brief (:

I got my license in Jan this year. My back ground is cna 5 yrs, MA 20 years in ambulatory care in hospital owened facilities.

This year has been horrific to say the least!!

I have quickly learned 2 things.

1 that LTC is the most regulated facet of health care and it is staffed by the most un-professional people!!

I loved taken care of geriatric pts when I was a cna, but in all the years away from LTC I had forgotten how awful it can be!!!! :(

So I just started a new job that I was sure I was going to love. I have been working in a locked alzheimers unit. I have worked like crazy to learn my job, never taken a lunch break. I thought it was going really good. I have been there 2 weeks, had 2 days orientation.

So at end of shift today the adminstrator came and had a "meeting" in the hall with several people. He informed me (in front of all these people!!) that he was posting my job, and that he was looking for someone with experience to work my unit!!

I was totally shocked and brokenhearted at the whole idea of being fired! And shocked at the un-professional way he did it!!!!!!!!!

He did say I was welcome to apply, but he wanted someone with experience to have my job.

It was all I could do to get out of there before the tears came.

That is way unprofessional to say the least. I would ask specifically what he meant by "posting my job". Also sounds as if they will use you as a warm body while they see if a more experienced nurse wants the position--however, if they don't, then you can work for them?? WHY would they make you re-apply for the positon you already hold?

Get clarification from him, then you need to speak to HR. Right to work and probationary period and they can do what they want, however, I don't get the applying part of it.....

Oh, that's awful! I know exactly how you feel. I was "fired" once similarly, but when I asked for clarification was told that I had called and quit. Yikes. In your case as in mine, sounds like you need to be in a better place and that you are working (or not?) for someone with no managerial or people skills. Maybe for peace of mind, stop by and see him before your next shift to ask what he was talking about? Especially where you do actually have healthcare experience, so it really makes no sense. What a weirdo. Sounds like you probably have nothing to lose. Don't feel too bad though. Sometimes things work out for the best. Your real dream job may be your next job.

Wow, that's a horrible management style. What was the reaction of other people he was standing there with? I envision them mentally updating their resumes, thinking that they would not trust him either. I"m sorry that this happened to you; and hope that you find somewhere better, quickly.

Sounds like they hired you to work in that unit but realized that you were not the best choice for the job. Seems like you still have a job at the facility, just not on that unit. He would not fire you and allow you to apply for the job.

How ridiculously unprofessional. What manager on earth would be so immature. If he had an issue he should spoken to YOU behind closed doors. You have the right to question your position and the reason why he handled the issue in the manner he held it.

Very poorly handled. Look elsewhere; it wouldn't have stayed a dream job for long with a supivisor like that.

I would not apply. He sounds like someone I definitely would not want to work with me. I think a good employer will keep you informed and you would know way before if you had did something that indicates your employers dissatisfaction.

In my younger, care-free years, I would have quit before he got the words out!:smokin: Today, with so many nurses wanting my a job, I would still quit that one.....just in a polite, ***-kissing way....you know, for the sake of a decent reference. Look at it this way, that job was vacant before you got it for a reason: it was a :poop: one! And not because of the patients, from my interpretation.

IMO, until you receive something official from HR, you're not fired. So continue to show up and work your schedule until something official is presented to you...else you do risk being terminated for not showing up to work.

And start trying to get out of Dodge ASAP. This sounds like a toxic environment.

You didn't get fired, you're being forced to quit.

They don't have to do the paperwork justifying your removal, they don't have to get all their ducks in a row first, because you're just going to give notice or not come back after that.

A previous poster stated that in their "younger, care-free years," they would have walked out; in my younger years, I would have stayed out of spite and made them fire me (along with giving them a "peppery" piece of my mind).

That's not a good idea now. Take the dignified route, give notice and find another job.

Just so you know, not all LTC/SNFs are like this. Many are run by idiots who have no idea what happens on the floor because they've spent their career behind a desk and only care about how they can cut the budget even more. But in some places, you'll have a DON who's worked their way up and understands what the job is really like. I hope you can find one of these.

For future reference, 2 days of orientation is ridiculous for any place, for any nurse at any level of experience. That's just a way for them to not pay you and a preceptor at the same time. If any place tells you that's how much orientation you're going to get, run!

This guy is crazy......you need to get out ASAP. If he thinks by offering you to apply to your position fulfills the requirement to avoid unemployment he's got another thing coming. Don't quit but look for another job! IMMEDIATELY

I think NurseDirtyBird is right, unfortunately. You thought this was your dream job, but perhaps your TRUE dream job is now available for you to find. Best of luck to you.

I don't know why, but I'm mad about this! Now that you're, "over it". Go to his office with a list of questions. 1) Why did you hire me for this position? 2) Why do you not think I'm capable of handling this position? Did I do something you/someone disapproves of? 3) Where do you plan to transfer me to since you are looking for someone to replace me? I know you think your fired but I don't think he can do that, specially since you were not even given time to prove yourself! I think someone else wants the job, and this is a way to make it available to them. I realize that it is probably in your own best interest to find somewhere else to work, and if you can afford to quit I would give your notice immediately, that way you can leave off that position from your resume. To be able to sleep at night I would like to know what is going on. This is ridiculous and no one should be allowed to treat people that way. I wish I could talk to him for you!!! I'd love to know anything you find out! Good Luck! :angrybird1:
