Health Department Clinic vs Physician Office

by Lutie

I am a new LPN graduate at 48 years old. I am looking into working in a Florida Department of Health clinic. Does anyone have any comments on working in a state public health clinic vs a private physician office? Thanks in advance for your help.

You would probably get better health care benefits working for civil service versus a private physician's office. And, I suspect better pay.

I am 44 yrs old and have been an LPN since 2006. I have worked in a pediatricians office all along. The office pays well, the benefits are wonderful, the doctors and other staff members are all like family. I love my job very much. I love working with the kids and their families. The job is relatively low stress. The hours work well with me having a family. Management is quite flexible. I am sure my experience is unique and there are probably many others who don't like working in a drs office but if you find one with a great staff, that's a key. But then again, it will be like that with any job.
Good luck in your search!

Since the health department clinic is affiliated with a state government, I'm assured this workplace will offer excellent health insurance, retirement, and other benefits that are superior to what is being offered by the private doctors' office.

The private doctors' office can close down anytime in the future if the doctor is unable to keep up with his/her monthly lease payments or malpractice premiums (this has been happening more often as the US economy slumps). In my opinion, the health department clinic is the safer bet.

Thanks for posting this, I had the same question. I just started working in specialist office and weeks into it the city calls for an interview. I looked up their benefits online and blew me away. I'm just worried about what to say at the interview, I'm sure they've spoken with many because my appt was a week and a half out.

Well I start with the health dept in about 2 weeks or so. FYI the pay is very low. Whatever the start pay is listed that's what it is gonna be because of the great benefits. Also found out they make it mandatory to participate in a retirement plan, automatically 6% total gross which varies in other states. Nervous about pay cut but excited to work in what intrests me.
