Nurses LPN/LVN

I got a job, I got a job, thank God in Heaven I finally got a job!! Sorry if that 's a little too enthusiastic! lol I've just been looking for the perfect job to fit my needs a while, and this one seems like the one. I will be working part time at a local dermatology clinic. I graduated LPN school in '07, but haven't worked at all hardly to be a stay at home mom. Therefore, I have no experience. This office has decided to hire me on part time & train me. I know a lady that works there, and I think she kind of helped me get the position, which I'm eternally greatful for. This job will allow me more family time than many starting LPN jobs. The hours are very flexible. However, the doctor who hired me said that I will have to learn quite a bit. I was just wondering if there are any other LPN's here who work in dermatology? If so, what should I be brushing up on in my nursing books? What medications are commonly used in dermatology that I should study on as well? Thanks so much!

there are several drug books specific to derm use. I worked in a derm practice yrs ago and enjoyed it.

learn terminology specific to skin problems, hopefully you will learn how to describe skin conditions. you'll have to process path samples correctly, call the pharmacy, speak w/pts when doing follow-up, use autoclave equipment, set-up various procedure and tx tables. you'll probably have to fill daily use cannisters of liquid N.

if the doc tx acne, you might be doing acne surgery (extractions). you mite be treating kids for molluscum, and heaven forbid you don't have to deal w/cleaning up after a scabies pt (complete wash-down/disinfect).

hmmmm...can't think of anything else right now.

go forth and conquer. and it's normal to be nervous. who isn't on the first day of any job? just go with it. keep your eyes and ears open, pay attention, and be a sponge. absorb it all!

congratulations!
