Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I posted this in the Virginia nursing forum, but never got any responses. I was wondering if any other LPNs might know here? I'm an LPN in the state of VA. I will be renewing my LPN license in two years. Virginia now requires CEUs within every two years to renew an LPN or RN license. I am considering taking a 3 credit college course in medical terminology this Fall. Does anyone know if this will count as a CEU class towards nursing?

The VA. board of nursing website said that 3 credit college courses count as long as they are nursing related, but the website will not say what specific classes will count as CEUs. I also emailed the board, but haven't heard from them yet.

Hello andreasmom02!!! I'm also a LPN in Virginia. I actually called the Va board of nursing because I was wondering the same thing because they didn't state which classes would count. I will be renewing my license in August 2015. They told me that anything pertaining to your NURSING education would count. This even counts A&P classes also. So, I hope this helps! :)

Hey! Thanks for your reply! :) So I'm assuming medical terminology would count?? I don't plan to pursue my RN or RN-BSN anymore... I'm actually wanting to get in to medical coding away from floor nursing, but keep my LPN active. I plan on trying to call the board soon too.

Yes, medical terminology would count. I would try calling them when they first open in the morning. That is what I did because it is hard to get through sometimes. Best of luck to you!!! :)

OK, Thanks so much! You too!

Didn't you already take med term for LPN school?

Believe it or not, no. We didn't have to have it for the LPN program I did through a local comm. college. We had to have Anatomy I & II, microbiology, math, psychology, &

be a certified CNA before starting program, but didn't have to have medical terminology.

Huh. English, math, a basic computer course, intro to psych, med term, A&P, intro to healthcare, and Spanish for Allied health were all required pre-reqs for ours, plus a PCT course (16 hours classroom, 16 hours clinical in local LTC facilities). No CNA experience necessary. You should do very well at med term then!

Yeah, we had to have intro to computers, basic public speaking & several others as well. I went to an LPN to RN bridge program, but exited as an LPN. I only need to more nursing courses to be an RN, I'm just getting tired of floor nursing. Thinking about getting in to medical coding. Thanks, I think I'll pass...The easiest part of nursing school for me was terminology memorization! lol
