Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hi guys! I am graduating with my LPN in Michigan in just a few short weeks. (Exciting!) I am really interested in working with children in homeless shelters or women &a children shelter, etc. I have thought about addiction specialty clinics as well. I have been doing my own research and can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. I am hoping someone who reads this forum can point me in the right direction to find these places in south east Michigan that may hire or need nurses. Again- I'm not even sure if these types of places hire nurses, specifically LPNS but any advice or help would be awesome! Thanks in advance! :)

Call the emergency departments in your area to speak with the social workers assigned to the ER (smaller ones may not have one on staff though). They should be able give you some possibilities. Also see if you can talk to case workers at your local welfare office for leads.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Nurses generally don't work in homeless or women's shelters. Direct care staff and social workers typically do hence why you are struggling to find job information as a soon to be graduate practical nurse.

Addiction shelters employ mostly licensed and clinical social workers, licensed alcohol/drug counsellors and if medication is given pharmacists & RNs since LPNs cannot work independently. Larger clinics that have inpatient services or dispense methadone or suboxone may have LPNs working under the direction of an RN supervisor

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

If you would like to specialize in addictions, workplaces that hire LPNs include methadone clinics and psychiatric hospitals that have chemical dependency units.

Thank you! great advice!
