Any Legal Nurse Consultants who did not take any courses?

I know that the courses are probably great but are there any LNC's who are working but have not taken the courses? I have done a great deal of reading by nurses who are LNC's who have written books on starting this type of business. Just interested in seeing how those without the courses may be fairing.

I am curious about the fee charged for review of the record and the fee charged for appearing in court. When asked to review, do you go ahead and prepare summaries, timelines etc?

If anyone posts their charges, please indicate what state you are in.

We do not allow posting of fee schedules due to "price-fixing" issues;).

Fees for expert testimony normally are greater than consulting fees and include all expenses paid by the attorney(s).

If only asked to review for merit, I render a short opinion (normally written and sometimes oral and written) based on said review. I do not prepare written summaries, timelines unless this is agreed to and in the contract prior to receiving the MR.

I did not attend any of the LNC courses you find online. I was asked to review one case, from there, my name was passed around and I am now called upon frequently. I charge upward of $200/hr and I'm in Texas. I hope that helps.

New here, am sort of semi-retired from 30+ years of LPN & RN nursing (as RN mostly ER) & considering LNC to suppliment my 'horse rescue' habit...:D

I see this is an older thread but interesting

For those that have not invested in courses did you ever just send letters with a resume' to let them know you were available as a LNC? & how did you determine your rate? Our lawyer (in AZ) says the wife of one of the partners in his firms is a retired RN who acts as a LNC & charges $40/hour (that would get me a couple days of hay! :) )

Also does anyone have experience with the business course offered at nnba.com

I have not heard of that course, but just from reading about it on the site, it appears it is only for setting up your LNC business. It does not provide any training regarding what an LNC does.

There is lots of information in threads on this forum about training options and job descriptions, etc. The online course from AALNC is quite reasonable.

You do not need to take any class to be an LNC. An LNC reads medical records, does medical research to back up his/her opinions, and provides the attorneys an opinion if a case has merit, if and how, the patient' care fell below the standard, or for trial support, etc.

There are alot of things that LNCs do.

One does not need to "learn" to be an LNC, because you are doing what you already know how to do- read medical records and do medical research. A high priced LNC program is not necessary by any means. The only thing that You know what goes on in a hospital, what and how things should be done, etc. LNCs really need to learn how to do is market themselves, and run a business.

Local Community Colleges have inexpensive business and marketing classes. The LNC program given by the AALNC is an excellant program, is reasonably priced, convenient- can be taken online, and at your own pace. You will not need to hand over your first born child to an over priced and over hyped LNC program. to be an LNC There is NO reason to have to take out a Fannie Mae loan to take an LNC course/program. Potential pre med/predental/ prelaw students take out loans like that because are almost guaranteed a high return on their investment when they graduate. Not so with LNCs.

And for that LNC who only charges $40 an hour for the work, she in vastly selling herself short by charging such a low amount. The rule of thumb is, charge about 30- 40% over what you would earn as an employee.

Again, the SBA can give you much better advice than I can.

PS- the LNC market IS getting oversaturated due to heavy marketing by some programs. Keep that in mind. I have had more than one attorney tell me that LNCs are a dime a dozen.

Thanks to you all. I have been scouring the net & this site for info & have found much. I'm wondering if any of you have an opinion re: AALNC course(s) ...

& then there's Complete course ranging from $1775 to $1900.

I do have some business experience as we owned an old mom & pop motel for 7 years & already have the EIN & LLC set up.

I know you get what you pay for, & do not want to shoot myself in the foot but money is an issue right now so I'm thinking a value package & get going asap. Then continue with education as $$$$ situation eases up. Make sense?

If you are seeking education, you cannot go wrong with the AALNC course(s) whether the value pack or otherwise. ;)

I may have missed a post, but before you invest see if you can talk with some attorneys in your area to see what the demand is for LNC.

Your state Bar Association may be of some assistance as

thanks! I did mention it to our attorney who thought it was a good idea & I'll feel it out with others but our whole county is only 215000 & covers 8500 sq miles... largest co in AZ so we are really spread out. Northern & Central AZ is pretty rural so I'm sure I'll need to spread out to other places
