Galen ASN?

U.S.A. Kentucky

Does anyone know anything about this program? The website doesn't seem to say a whole lot. What does it mean "no pre-reqs required?" How long is the program???

fulltime days LPN is 12 months.

fulltime RN is an additional 15-18 months.

so a total of about 2 1/2 years.

no-prereqs means that you don't have to take specific classes before entering the nursing school like you do at JCC , Univ of Louisville or Bellarmine.

i am starting there at the end of april & can not wait.

Hello,

I am just finishing up my first semester and love it so far! No pre-requisites means just what it says, you don't have to have your CNA, any English, A&P or any others. Everything is built into the program. In order to be accepted into the LPN program you must pass an entrance exam or have received a particular score on the ACT within the past few years. I can't remember the specifics because they changed entrance exams recently but I'm sure you can find the score requirements if you look around here on allnurses. I know there are a lot of people trying to get in. The higher your test scores the better. Provided you pass your entrance exam, you will definitely eventually get in. It just takes a bit longer if you have a lower score. If you don't get in when you want, it's usually possible to start in the night program and then transition into the day program the next semester. It takes a little while to get on the same schedule as the day program people but it is a way to get in immediately if you think you are going to have to wait. You must be prepared to study and from speaking with others from later semesters, it only gets harder. Just as any other nursing school though, it is hard work. It is definitely manageable if you know what your in for. It is however much faster to complete than traditional nursing schools. You must first earn your LPN and then you are eligible to apply for the RN program. You must have a minimum of a 2.7 grade point average to be accepted into the RN program. Although this program is rather expensive, you are done in half the time. Another advantage is, after 1 year you will have your LPN and can work as an LPN and go to school for your RN. Some nursing homes are paying as much as $16 per hour for LPN's. If for some reason you weren't able to go onto the RN program, you would have your LPN to fall back on. Most traditional nursing programs don't have the LPN built in and if for some reason you had to drop out of nursing school after the first year of nursing school, you would have nothing to show for it. Well that was a mouthful and probably a bit confusing but in all honesty Galen is a wonderful school! I have been very pleased thus far and think it is certainly a school worth checking out.

Mommy05 - thanks for your post and the great information, I have looking for information on the Galen LPN program!! I am slated to start at Galen in Feb 2010 -- I continue to hear from others how demanding but great the program is. I am somewhat nervous and I have had no idea what to expect.. Reading your post just makes me more excited.
