My family and I currently live in West Michigan but my husband is trying to transfer with his current company to Kansas in Overland Park. I'm doing some research of the area. Looks like KU and St. Lukes are 2 of the better hospitals to work for in that area? I'm currently a L&D RN and plan on staying in L&D if and when we move. Anyone know which hospital is best to work at as far as working conditions etc? The hospital I work for currently has about 120 births a month on average. This is kind of what I'm looking for when moving. I'm not interested in working at a "baby factory" meaning get them in, get them delivered and on to the next now, now, now...move it ,move it, move it, kind of environment.

I'm also looking for nice areas to live. We'd like a upper-middle class area, great schools, low crime area. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Hi-

I'd love to give you some info - I work for St. Luke's and have lived in the Overland Park area for quite some time- pm me to discuss~~

Saint Luke's and KU are both great places. I've heard good things about the L&D at Saint Luke's South, which is located in Overland Park. Good Luck!

Btw, I work at KU, but went to school through Saint Luke's, so I've had experience at both places, though I don't work L&D. I would recommend either one.

Thanks to both of you. I'll get in contact with you if we do decide to move. :o)

I live in Overland Park, and I love it!! I work at The University of Kansas ... the drive to work is like 15 mins. If you are a L&D nurse there are tons of opportunities here are some other hopsital that are more know for L&D, or at least put a bit of money towards the L&D uit.

As for livivng, I would stay on the KS side, probably Leawood or Southern Overland Park for the uppermiddle class. Blue Valley Schools (West or North) or Olathe Schools (East or Northwest) are probably your best bed. But Brookside for more of a down-town feel is nice, especially if you can afford private schools. KU med is always a favorite, but St. Jo right off I-435 and State Line was good when I did my L&D clinical there.

both st. luke's and ku are great hospitals. i work at ku and love it. the only thing about that ku l&d is that you will probably deal with more high risk pregnancies then at st. luke's just because of the typical patient population. the nice thing about ku to keep in mind is that if you are a benefited employee all you pay for health insurance wise is your monthly premium. if you have any thing else done at kumed or by a ku physician you don't pay for anything, including the co-pay. i don't know of any other hospital in the country that does this.

I worked at Menorah Medical Center in the Family Birthing Center. I don't recommend it at all. License is always on the line. No support from Director or Charge staff. Shawnee Mission would be my choice or Saint Lukes South. Good Luck.

I just finished my L&D rotation at KU as a student nurse. If you like to be extraordinarily busy and hae a lot of difficult/challenging births, then this is the place for you. They are very flexible with shifts and if you are willing to work evenings or nights the shift diff. is amazing. Good luck!
