  1. Nov 28 by resilientnurse What type NP are you? PMHNP Where (state)(rural/urban) do you practice? Midwest, Urban Are you independent or in a group? Group How many years experience? 2 months What is your before tax paycheck amount? $5600.00 Monthly or bi-weekly? Biweekly Salary/hourly/other(explain)? Salary, $145,600.00 Avg hours on check? 80 (really like 72-75 actually worked) What are the perks of your contract? (ie. PTO/vacation/bonuses) Free health, vision, and dental insurance for self and family, company paid premiums. PTO/Vacation not great. I tried to PM you but your inbox is full. I had a couple of questions for you regarding your position. I live in the midwest as well and will be graduating with my PMHNP in a couple of years so any help you can give about classes, clinicals, ANCC exam and job salaries, etc would be great!! Thanks!!
  2. I would suggest a couple of areas. Psychiatric nursing is many times 8 hour shifts, where i work it is M-F as well. Also, long term care generally works 8 hour shifts as well. Many of them work every other weekend but, there are some that are going to the M-F scheduling as well, at least here in Kansas and Missouri. Dialysis nursing is another option you should look at. Good luck!
  3. Thanks! I will look at both of the ones you suggested. I would love John Knox Village but, although I am licensed in Mo, I would rather stay closer to home. So, thank you for your help....I really appreciate it! :)
  4. :) Thanks. I figured I would enjoy psych...especially since I couldn't find anything in LTC. But, it isn't at all what I thought it would be like. It's very difficult to feel close to your patients or even really get to know them that well....partly because I am in the ED I think. I may just talk to the Nurse Manager about moving to a unit, because maybe there I can find more of the type of work I enjoy.
  5. I am a new grad that is currently working in a psychiatric ED because I haven't been able to find a job working where I want, in LTC. Does anyone know of any facilities hiring for RN's in or near Olathe, KS? Please help....I really want to find something that fits my job needs better. Thanks, Deb
  6. I am a new graduate and I agree with you completely! I love LTC and prefer to work in that area. Unfortunately I am not getting any interest from anyone but hospitals right now...ugh! Forget those other people who look down on your career! Taking care of the elderly is one of the most rewarding and amazing jobs on the planet! I dare any nurse to tell me differently!!
  7. I know KU MED has a union. Others that I have "heard" have a union are many of the HCA hospitals such as Overland Park Regional and Menorah. Someone mentioned Olathe Medical Center as well but....I honestly have no idea on that one.
  8. I am graduating in December and have great interest in this question. I have been working at KU Hospital for the last year while in school and can say with absolute certainty that I have no intention of working at a hospital once I graduate. I spent many years in LTC as a CNA and love it. I would really like to get an idea of what I should expect for pay and where I should start my negotiations at when they offer a lower amount than what is expected. Anyone with advice or ideas, please post on here or send me an IM. Thanks!
  9. I just finished my L&D rotation at KU as a student nurse. If you like to be extraordinarily busy and hae a lot of difficult/challenging births, then this is the place for you. They are very flexible with shifts and if you are willing to work evenings or nights the shift diff. is amazing. Good luck!
  10. It does scare me. It bothers me because I know that the residents can't be always getting the proper care. When I say management, I mean charge nurse. Although, I do know that a lot of places have ADON's that only have about 1 year of experience. Go figure. Heck, on my floor at the hospital I currently work at the charge nurse for days about half the time only has a little over a year of experience. I mean, she is a great nurse, but she is not ready to lead to that extent. She has to lead other 7 other nurses and 3-4 techs when she is in charge, with 22 progressive care patients...and usually has patients of her own. The shortage is starting to make sense though. Why would anyone want to stay when they have to work that hard and only get about $25 and hour?
  11. Wow! Thanks everyone for your answers. I am seriously considering doing both...one prn and the other full time or both part time. Here in KS the LTC system is so low on nurses that many times, the person is hired and only has about 6 months before they end up in management. That is kinda why I was worried. I don't want to screw up THAT soon...lol! Having worked in LTC with both good and bad management I think I can really help make a difference...eventually. Does anyone here know the best places to work near Kansas City on the Kansas side for LTC or AL?
  12. Wow. Well, you can only do what you can do. If they really want to finish the program, then I guess they are going to have to find some time in their own lives...I mean if I was going to do this, I would do it...take a few days off or something if I had to. Maybe talk to my boss and let him know the importance of it to me. But, I wouldn't worry too much....you seem to be doing all you can.
  13. Hi everyone! I have worked in LTC and AL for quite awhile as a CNA but, I will be graduating with my RN in a year and although everyone tells me to work in a hospital...my heart is with the elderly and LTC. I want to be able to actually get to know my residents...for more than a few days or a couple of weeks. Anyway, I don't really know what it is a RN does in LTC. Can someone give me the titles and the job descriptions? Also, if you do decide to get into management: is a Bachelors in Business Administration and an ADN enough or will I need to get my BSN? Thanks in advance!!:)
  14. Have they all been able to even find a clinical experience or do you set it up for them? You could try having the exams be online and available for a two or three day period. Other than that, I have nothing...lol
  15. I am a student but have done a lot of research into this area. You can get your SANE right out of school and/or take the forensic class somewhere...although there are only a few schools that have a program, Kaplan has a class you can take...expensive though. As for where to work...I would suggest emergency medicine or ICU. If you can find it, a job at the police or DA's office may work as well. You can also get into death investigation at the coroners office sometimes. Hope that helps some.
