Should I Look For Jobs in Ontario?

I am a New grad from New York and I passed my NCLEX. My country of origin is Nigeria but I have been in America for over 11 years. I was on F-1 international student status in college and now I am on OPT. However, no employer will hire me with my OPT status here in the States. I am now considering Canada because I also need permanent residency. I don't mind if I get sponsored in America or Canada as long as I don't go back to Nigeria. Anyway, Do you know where are the new graduate jobs in Canada? I only speak English so I can't live in Quebec. But where in Canada can I apply for work? How is the job prospect in Ontario? And what is the process like? Do I have to take another exam (CRNE) even if I passed my NCLEX in The States?

Yes you would need to take the CRNE. NCLEX is for working in the US.The difficulty would be in finding an employer. Nursing has been taken off the list for Federal Skilled Worker visas. You would be looking at a Temporary Work Permit. You would need an employer willing to get an LMO and go through the TWP process.Jobs for new grads are also pretty scarce.

Yes, you have to,pass the CRNE "even if you passed the NCLEX in the States". Canada is not part of the United States. Also, the entry to practise in Ontario for RNs is the BScN. You did not mention if you had that, or if you have an ADN.

New grads in Ontario are having problems getting jobs, so I don't know what your chances would be.

I have a BSN. Where in Canada do you think I can have a good chance of getting in? What about Alberta? British Columbia?

Neither BC or Alberta would be good choices.You would need to apply for a license and pass the CRNE before you would be considered by an employer.

While hell might not freeze over before you found a job in the western provinces, there are a lot of new, locally educated grads that would be considered before you.

You entered the US as a student, surely you knew you would be expected to return to your country of origin at some point? It's rough all over the world right now, and yes some places have it worse than others but have you thought about how your skills and education might benefit your homeland? Several of the younger nurses I work with are in Africa right now working as volunteers.

Moved to International nursing

You do realise that the process to go through the college can take up to 1-2 years as an International Educated Nurse?

As mentioned nursing has been removed from the federal skilled list and although there are many routes to come to Canada (see the CIC website) generally as a nurse you need a TWP, medical, employer and LMO and many employers will not even look at you without the college stating that you meet requirements to be a nurse in Canada.

Have you maintained your F1 status because I believe from what I have been reading that OPT only gives you 3 months to find a job otherwise it is invalid and you could be out of status?

I actually came to the US at age 11 as a diplomats child. But thanks anyway
