redpath rallies bravehearts for a big go against wallabies

scotland have been written off as world cup quarter-final cannon fodder for the wallabies this weekend, but captain bryan redpath has exhorted his team to rise to the challenge and take the game to the world champions.

the scots' chances have been denigrated, with 1991 world cup-winning coach bob dwyer declaring the wallabies can beat them blindfolded in brisbane on saturday.

redpath, scotland's most-capped scrum-half and retiring after the tournament, says his team have to play better than they have for months if they are to compete with the australians, who are coming off a struggling 17-16 victory over ireland last saturday.

scotland haven't won in australia since 1982, trail 12-7 overall and the 59-capped redpath sees a victory at lang park as a massive challenge.

"we'll have to take our game to them, i don't think we can sit back and hope that we can live off some mistakes and errors, we have to get our game going, more so than we have in the past four games here," redpath told a press conference on wednesday.

"australia are very strong wherever they attack, so we have to make sure that we put pressure on them, win quick ball.

"that's what it's all about, getting good clean ball that we can get people running hard and working together. we have to be very clean over the contact."

the scots have struggled at the world cup following up two inconclusive wins over japan and united states with a tournament record 51-9 loss to france before getting up in the final minutes 22-20 over fiji last saturday.

"we can't play too much rugby in our own area, but when we do get in certain parts of the pitch we just have to keep possession," he said.

"we went a little bit better against fiji, we just have to be better, the challenge is massive for us and we have to play what suits us best and i don't think playing rugby in our half is going to be the best way for us."

not a chance against the wallabies - not a chance :roll :kiss

Can we play extra men, like England? 4 or 5 should be enough!

We are, of course international experts on the "Magnificent Defeat" strategy, our history is littered with them.:roll

Jones - Scots gave us their best

Wallabies coach Eddie Jones acclaimed Scotland's best performance of the tournament after his Australian side booked their anticipated place in the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Australia's 33-16 victory over the brave Scots means they will play New Zealand in Sydney next Saturday. It was an often below-pay display from the world champions, who were held 9-9 at half-time before second-half tries from centre Stirling Mortlock, skipper George Gregan and number eight David Lyons made the game safe.

"I thought Scotland competed very well at the tackle area, and it was by far their best performance of the tournament," said Jones.
