Nurse in Northern Ireland with clinical hours deficiencies for NCLEX

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I am a staff nurse in Northern Ireland and I trained in QUB school of Nursing. I have applied for licensure through the Michigan Board of Nursing to sit the NCLEX exam. My CGFNS CES report has just been issued and states I have clinical hours deficiencies in Maternal, Children's and Mental Health Nursing, as my branch programme was in Adult Nursing. I have contacted both Michigan BON and CGFNS to see how I can make these hours up and all I have been told is that I need to get a university course to get both theory and practice hours at the same time, even though I already have the theory hours in these areas. I have no idea how to go about this, even if its possible! If anyone has any advice or information at all, I would be so grateful!

Am i rifht in thinking that you did no clinical whatsoever in mental health, maternity and children, did you not do a common foundation year? If that is the case i would look into unis that do the Common foundation year programmes

Hi, thanks for replying! I did a common foundation programme in year one, where we had 1 additional placement, and mine was in learning disability, so I have no clinical practice in the other 3 areas!

I would approach your uni and ask them if you can sit in on classes again and do 3 placements in the areas you need, its worth s try! If not try and find a CFP programme , my CFP covered all the areas in clinical and theory , but my year was the last year to do CFP , that was in 2010, but universities still do it ,

They may require that clinicals and theory be done together to avoid the concurrency issue.

There is only 13 states that have concurrency , i don't think Michigan is one of them but check :)

Thank you! Do you know how I would check that out? I called Michigan and they said they weren't sure if I had to do the theory and clinicals together, that it was CGFNS' decision, so I checked with them and they said it always has to be together! (is this the concurrency issue?).

Michigan does not have concurrency issues as far as i know :)

Its these 13 states (Alabama, Arizona California, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Vermont, Virginia, Washington)

Really? Im not sure if it is in Michigan as its one of the easier states to get in too! When you call cgfns , majority of the time you are speaking to a call centre representative , whom are often abrupt and not an officer , i would email cgfns and ask to get clear clarification from an officer if mighigan has concurrency issues
