Filipino graduate nurses in ontario, Canada

Hi my name is Greg, im 24 yrs old..

is there anyone here who's from the philippines that can share their experience regarding becoming a r.n here in ontario?

I graduated just this year 2010 in philippines, i was already a canadian citizen before i went back to philippines to take up nursing, thinking that it is more affordable to study back home and just come back here once i graduate.

Now that i am done school i just got back here in ontario a few months ago, i went to CNO to get information regarding what to do to be a R.N in here..they gave me an application form so that they can evaluate me. I am just waiting for my transcript to arrive then it'll take 3months for them to assess me..

I've been wondering if i have to go back to school or will they let me write the crne exam? because i read from a few people in this site that ontario does not recognize our degree and it is only equivalent to rpn in here..

Any information would be appreciated..

my email is [email protected]

Only CNO can evaluate your credentials and decide where you belong in the nursing world.

If you plan to work in Canada, are a citizen it is always better to be educated here because you will always be considered an International nurse and subject to evaluation if you move to another province.

thank you..i decided to go back in the philippines to study because it'll be cheaper..

so it depends on their evaluation? i hope they dont make me study for 2 more yrs..if thats the case ill just go to cali and take the nclex exam..i read some posts in here saying that in Ontario our degree is only equivalent to an rpn..

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

A lot will depend on what your transcripts state and what requirements the college want

Text speak????

If you plan to work in an English speaking country, it's never a bad idea to use the language as it should be used.

Did you discuss the fact that you do not have registration in the Philippines with the CNO? If you do not have registration and if you are not eligible for registration in the Philippines, how will you meet requirement #5 of the CNO's 7 requirements?

All nurses who wish to practise as an RN or RPN in Ontario must hold a current General Certificate of Registration with the College. To obtain one, applicants must first meet seven requirements:

  1. Completion of an acceptable nursing or practical nursing program (or equivalent).
  2. Evidence of recent safe nursing practice.
  3. Successful completion of national nursing registration examination.
  4. Evidence of fluency in written and spoken English or French.
  5. Registration or eligibility for registration in the jurisdiction where you completed your nursing program.
  6. Proof of Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or authorization under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) to engage in the practice of nursing.
  7. Good character and suitability to practise, as indicated by a Declaration of Registration Requirements and a Canadian Criminal Record Synopsis

More detail about the requirement http://www.cno.org/en/become-a-nurse/new-applicants/international/requirements-for-becoming-a-nurse-in-ontario/requirement-5/

Suggest you discuss this with the CNO because they may be waiting for verification from PRC before they begin processing your application.

@ dishes yes i do not have registration in the philippines..

Question number one on section 5: summary of registration is:

1: Did you obtain registration as a nurse in the jurisdiction where you completed your initial nursing program?

if you answer "no" all you have to do is explain why which is pretty simple considering the fact that i am a canadian citizen and i would rather work here than in the phils..and also if your answer is no you do not have to complete section 6 and 7, which is indicated in section 5..

CNO is still waiting for my transcript though my school is kind of slow..i might send another request just incase..

@skynai, yea me too im kinda worried, but ive reading alot of stuff in here..ppl are saying that CNO only looks on the subject that you have taken...so if you got your degree in a good school then it should be enough..i went to university of perpetual help dalta system in las pinas..i just hope their standards is comparable in here..i live in pickering but im mostly in markham cos of work..
