Bad Contracts with Bad Agencies

Sorry to have to post something like this, but I have been receiving horror story after horror story the past few weeks, and there is absolutely no reason that you have to put up with any of those lies.

From DHEL28's agency placing 9 people in one apt without heat in NYC in the winter, and only one bathroom, they were told that accommodations were provided. And not even a bed, they had to buy that for themselves. To another agency incorrectly filling out documents so that the nurse got denied, then telling the nurse that the agency was going to pay for an attorney to go to Washington DC to correct things. But one year later they have not been resubmitted with the corrections, and number two, the immigration centers are not in Washington D.C. And this nurse was also told that the agency would know twenty seconds after arriving in the US that he was here. Impossible. And another that had a $25,000 cancellation policy but told that if she tried to leave, it would cost her about $100,000.

If you are having issues with your agency being untruthful and taking advantage of you, please contact the Embassy for your country here in the US, as well as the US Embassy in your home country where you had your interview.

Once you have arrived in the US, you cannot be deported. Do not let an agency threaten you with this. The green card gives you permanent residency.

OH my........:o :o :o

PEOPLE, avoid agencies as much as possible!

Put'em out of business!

I do not want any one to misunderstand me. There are some excellent agencies out there that do what they say that they are going to do, and do not take advantage of anyone. But to tell someone that they will be deported if they leave the agency, because of ill-fated promises that the agency made. Or say that they are providing accommodations, when 9 people are placed in a small apt in NYC in the winter with no heat and nothing in the apt. My Yorkies live better than that.

Part of the agreement that the agencies have with immigration is that there will be work available for the nurse when they get here. Three months and no work, when they have a green card in hand, and an RN license is just shameful. And to tell the nurse to contact their families back home to send them money? Personally, I think that the agency is responsible for paying that nurse their salary, since they are an employee of that agency. That is their responsibility. I am sure that immigration as well as any attorney would agree with me on that one. If there is no work, then the agency has not lived up to their part of a legal binding contract.

But, there are good agencies out there. And you deserve it.:)

it's good thing that a forum like allnurses.com exists! thank you suzanne for educating us about these matters.

shall we post the names and addresses of these agencies?? so others may know, and avoid them...

That can become an issue at the moment to post them here because of legal issues. Feel free to swap the names via pm.

But be all means, you can put the good ones. Then the others that aren't on the list will stand out like sore thumbs. Most of you know who they are right now.

Thanks for asking.:)

That's a good suggestion, Suzanne. :balloons:

i am hoping and praying to God that our hurdles with these agencies be over. I know that my difficulties are not as much as others because i am single and i do not have a family here. the main thing to do right now for me is to tell our filipino nurses back home to look into the specifics of the contract and make sure that there is a hospital sponsoring for a full time job not just a contracted employee. this needs to address to the US embassy counter checking for permanent nursing position in a hospital is a more secured situation.

If want has to go through agencies, go for those that recruit nurses for hospitals in the US and the hospitals will be the one who will petition and the agencies are the ones who will process the papers. Check also the contracts and ask if you do not understand.

Do not go for agencies that handle staffing. These are the types who can not provide adequate jobs when the hospitals they are in contract with do not need any more nurses and stop hiring their services.

You should not be an employee of the agency, but come over to the US as a direct hire, and yes, there are agencies that do this.:)

I could write a book with all of these horror stories that I have received in the past few weeks.:angryfire

Dear Friends: There is an issue on the other nurse's forum that just blew out of proportion. It was about nurses making demands of where they want to be placed in. I am not going to repost the whole argument over here, but the whole issue came up and blew out of proportion when someone representing a firm singled out Filipinos and said that Filipino RNs have an attitude where they can make demands on their employers. He said that their nurses are placed in facilities where there is a need; THEY WILL TELL WHEN AND WHERE. If we make such demands on where we will be placed, then we probably will not be considered.

It is true that DEMANDING and NEGOTIATING are two different things, but is it really wrong to make some FAIR and REASONABLE demands for our own good?

I would really like to hear everyone's opinion.
