Thread for those starting the Indy Ivy Tech Fall 09 ASN & LPN Programs

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

Hello!

I thought it would be nice to have a thread for those of us who will be starting the Fall 09 ASN & LPN Programs at the Indy campus.

It looks like each campus has a different routine. I thought it might be handy to have a thread to guide/support us as we get our to-do lists completed and beyond.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted! :nurse:

We will be seeing each other at the June Orientation.

Hi to all the soon-to-be nursing students! If any of you have any time, I'd love to hear some details about your orientation, what kinds of things you have to do before classes start, who can you get CPR cert. from, any other tidbits of info or advice. I'll be applying for Spring 2010 and I just realized that the orientation for that will be just a little over 3 mos away! (they have it in late Oct. for Lawrence campus I think). Thanks for any info anyone can give. And congrats to you all!

Hi csab,

the first thing on my list was getting my Ivy Tech ID. It must be the new style one from the Lawrence campus. So that one is easy. I did my fingerprints at the Carmel police dept. which they do for free for residents. Now I have to take them downtown to the State Police to submit my background check. This week I will be taking care of that. I am already CPR cert. Healthcare Provider, but that needs to be taken care of too. Now my shots are a different story, so I think I am just going to get them all done at the Health Dept Marion County. I have had poison ivy so I was waiting for my body to get rid of that before I subject it to all those immunizations. Everything must be done by Aug 20th that is our next all day 8-5 orientation. All of us are waiting for our schedules, they (nursing directors) select them for us. It is either M-R or T-F. You can pick clinicals, which means you let them know North, South, East, West or Central. Then they will tell you which location you will be attending clinicals. Items to purchase: Pen light, all white shoes with backs, stethoscope, watch with a second hand, and bandage scissors.

Well Chris, I think I got it down for you. I'll keep you posted!

Hi, for those of you who applied and got in for fall--quick question: On the application (just picked up one for Spring), am I supposed to fill in the box with the spaces for when/where I took the pre-reqs and what grade/pts I get for them, and then also the TEAS date and scores? Or does the nursing office staff do that. It doesn't say "For office use only" but it does say "Date received in office" above the boxes to be filled in, so I'm not clear if I am supposed to fill that in or not. I certainly don't want to fill out the app. wrong and not get in because of something like that!

Lora, when will you get your schedule? Do you have to wait until just before the term starts to know what days/times you will have class?

If your form was the same as mine at Evansville Ivy Tech, you just fill in the top 1/3 of the sheet. The bottom 2/3 is for the Nursing dept to complete. I know it seems like you should have to fill in more, it seems to simple. I got into the ASN for this fall, so I did my correctly. good luck

Hey Chris, I got my schedule on thursday.

Monday 8:30-11:20

Tuesday 8:30-3:50

Wednesday 9:30-11:20

Thurs 8:30-2:50 first 5 weeks

then clinical 6"45am-3:30

Friday OFF

It doesn't look to bad- in my opinion, but I hear life is crazy, so I am still just trying to prepare myself to find time to still brush my teeth. Some people make it sound that bad!!!!:urgycld:but I am not going to let it rain on my parade! I AM READY!!!!!! Lora

Thanks for the info Lora. I'm just trying to figure out how many mornings I might need to drop my kids off at before-school care come January.

Do you need the Med. Terminology book anymore? (doubting you are going to take that class as well as nursing!)

Congrats to all of you coming into the program this Fall. The best advice I can give is make sure you get a full night's sleep and eat a big breakfast before clinical. So don't try to study until 1 am when you have to be up at 4:30. It doesn't ever turn out well. LOL

It is a very difficult program, but you will get out of it what you put in. It's a huge workload and some days you will feel completely incompetent. This is normal!!! Just keep an open mind and don't beat yourself up a whole bunch and before you know it, something will just click for you. Good luck to all of you!!!
