Ivy Tech Fall 2011 Waiting on THE letter

U.S.A. Indiana

I've been reading "allnurses" for several years, never thinking I'd reach this point. So, I never registered. However, after 2-years of night classes the dream of nursing might become a reality. Now, the wait for acceptance/denial begins. It's all come to this point for many of us.

Several years ago there was a forum where people were waiting on THE letter. Why not have one for the folks waiting on 2011? If there IS one I missed it.

We're all in the same boat, all waiting on the letter, and wondering if there was a minor detail overlooked. Was the score high enough? Did my transcript fall through the folder, then get swept under the desk? (That one woke me up last night) In my case, my brain can handle the wait...my stomach/intestines are not doing so well.

Thought this might be a nice thread to vent, support, and otherwise worry with each other for the next couple of months. Near as I can tell, it's going to be 74 days, give or take, before we all know....one way or the other.

Best of luck and keep prayin' I know I am! :)

Well, I am trying not to obsess but the harder I try the more I can't stop thinking about it! I am dreaming about it at night, sometimes I get in and others I don't. Anyone else spazzing out this bad or do I need to get a counselor lol!?! It is so long to wait under these types of conditions... sigh. Ok, now that I got that off my chest I want to say that I am renewing my vow of staying positive and not getting an ulcer over this! Either I will get in or I won't end of story. Anybody have a back up plan? I don't but I know plenty of people who do. Seems smart now. I guess I should start considering other options just in case.

Hold together, Hopeful....time will pass. For me, the waiting impatience comes in phases...some days, I'm crazy with wondering. Others, I don't really think about it. The class and work schedule now is a tricky balance and keeps me distracted most days.

On the backup plan....I took my current job to allow me more study time, and I really like working there. They know about school, but also offered me a nice promotion if things don't work out for nursing. I prayed a lot about it and finally "put out a fleece.' If it's God's plan...then I'll get accepted for this Fall. If not...I'll take the promotion and know that God knows best. SO many things have happened on this path, though, that I still think it will work out...somehow.

Hello to all!! First off I want to wish YOU ALL the best in luck of getting accepted to the school of your choice!! I also hope that those who have nursing in their heart are those that get in. With that being said, I am here to spill the beans on what I applied with. I know it's ridiculously sad, my hope is it make someone else's day. I have A's in all four pre requirements and a 71.3 on the TEAS (Yikes:eek:). Reading was 85, Science was 75, Math 60, and English was the worst with like 56 or something. I am a lifelong reader, hence that grade, I LOVE science and have taken advanced courses in all areas but Physics, Math I ran out of time on, and English I underestimated (My only language is English, so I studied more science then the others). BIG mistake people:banghead:. My points...dun dun dun 160/190:igtsyt:. I hope and pray that my desire to be a nurse is smiled on by :bowingpurGod and I get in, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. I do hope though that it gets your hopes up. Also they are taking 90 RN students due to no PN this year!!!

I have an associate's degree from IU med for radiology, I thought I wanted to do that but once I left my CAN position I realized that my heart and soul are with nursing. I like radiology, I do, but I cannot be a patient advocate in that field. I snap a picture and send you on your way, the end. I want to hold the hand of a sick patient again and be there throughout their stay. I want to heal physically and mentally. I miss the sad parts of nursing when you get to hold and cry with the family of a patient who has passed, I like to help make their last moments the best. I miss the happy times of seeing someone heal and move on with life. I don't get that in radiology.

I wanted to get into Ivy tech because it is a 2 year degree, not 4 like IUPUI. I have a family to care for and am in large debt due to my current degree. I needed to be able to get in, get out, and work. I have my back up plan, IUPUI. My GPA is 3.93 and all I need is Anatomy 261, which I am now taking this summer session 1 at IUPUI. Once I complete that I am eligible for their program and the advisor guaranteed me admission with my GPA and experience. So I am not at a loss, I just don't know how I will make it 4 years.

I will also retake the TEAS this summer and work on my math time and my English. I wish Ivy Tech had a better process for selecting candidates. I have worked as a CNA for 4 years and in radiology 1 year. The TEAS should be thrown out. When I applied to radiology, which is harder to get into than nursing, they looked at your GPA (which Ivy could use instead of the TEAS), you then had to write an essay on WHY you wanted to be a rad tech and about your experience with volunteering, you then had to actually volunteer a certain amount of time (a wonderful way to get people to see what the field is like). All of this was added up to points. You could get extra points for volunteering more than the needed time, for working in the medical field (PCT, CNA, you can do this without an actual MA or CAN certificate), and then for reapplying. After this was all in and points decided, 75 students were chose to be interviewed, and you got points based on your interview, 30 of the 75 get in. I think this way BY FAR surpasses Ivy Techs current admission policies. As of now, someone who has no clue of nursing but good grades can get in, decide it's not for them and drop, leaving a seat empty that a student really wanted. Also, right now Ivy Tech is only looking at book smarts, and let me tell you in the medical field, you need commonsense also. Most people I know with book smarts, lack all common sense. What about the many many people who are only poor test takers, but would make amazing nurses? They get left out because of the TEAS. Ivy Tech needs to look deeply at their process. It's not good enough to weed out those who should be nurses and those who shouldn't be. If they want the TEAS then use it still, but they need to adapt OTHER measures as well. The TEAS makes or breaks you, and it shouldn't. I am not knocking the TEAS because I did poorly, it was my fault I ran out of math time and my fault I figured English is my language, I don't have to look to hard at that section. I controlled my outcome on that exam. However, that exam should NOT be the deciding factor, can I get an AMEN!!!

Good luck to YOU ALL who deserve to be nurses:nurse:!!! I hope my bad scores give you a smile, seriously I do:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe. I have backup plans, my life is not over:). By the way I applied only to Lawrence as I cannot afford the travel time to other locations. If anyone agrees with me that they need a change on the admission guidelines, please follow me in emailing them my concern. Thanks guys and congrats to those who did AMAZING on the TEAS, you beat its difficult but and put A LOT of your time into it, congrats to you. Prayer to all who deserve to get in this fall!!!

I also am waiting for THE letter!! I applied to the Valparaiso & Gary campus. I realized after I visited the Gary campus that I had NO desire to go there, but we'll see what happens, plus it's a 40 minute drive for me while the Valpo campus is only 10! I also heard that as of March 31st they only had about 90 applicants, their usual is about 200! So I guess that's good for everyone applying there. I have A's in all my pre-reqs, I'm taking ANP102 now and got a 78% on my TEAS, which was in the Advanced category. How do they determine that, is it only off the the percentile average? Anyway, a classmate of mine told me that at the info session she went to they told them that anyone who got "advanced" was a shoe-in for the program. I really hope that's the truth! I want to be a labor and delivery nurse! What does everyone else want to specialize in??:nurse:

Any body on here know how many people turned in app's for the lawrence campus? I will call and ask today, though the girl who answers the phone is not always the greatest. I think she has good and bad days. Who can get mad at her when she probably gets the same question 90 times a day!!! I would be short to Im sure :)

I applied at Lawrence only so I would be interested to know how many people applied there but I am way to chicken to call, lol, so please when you find out be sure to post!!!!:D

I just called and asked if she had a rough guess and I was told no. But she said it was a lot, whats a lot, I do not know.

I believe in the recent past it has been 400+ per term applying.

Does anyone have any idea how many apps Greencastle had? What about Terre Haute?

It would be nice if the campuses posted how many people applied...:) It would be easy and even a positive PR move. "435 people applied to our school...look how good we are..."

I keep hearing the number of applications is down, which in a way is good for those of us who did apply. The wild card this year will be the new Math 13X requirement. Even if someone is accepted, they must have 13X finished before starting classes this fall. In my Finite 135 class last fall there were 30+ people the first night. 12 of us took the final!

I can't help but wonder if some of the alternates will be called because someone couldn't get through the math. I had a hard time with the pace of 16 weeks...can't imagine doing it in 8. To me, it would be worse to know you were accepted, but stumbled because of the math. Wow.

By the way, I have to agree with other folks that the TEAS test + 4 grades is a poor way to determine if someone should be in the program. Interviews and personal experience would be great way to judge if someone should be a nurse. However, with hundreds of people applying to each campus there just wouldn't be the resources to talk to everyone. Good or bad this is probably the most efficient way with so many applicants.

We're getting there!!!!:coollook: I've been reading the Ivy Tech sites and talking to a lot of folks. Seems that most application scores ranged in the 160's - 170's. There have only been a few folks I've heard of in the 180's. I've also heard of a few in the 150's.

Have NO idea why, but I keep checking my mail. Like they would say, "you're probably going to get in...so we're sending you this letter." Or "you didn't have a chance, we wouldn't hire you in a funeral home..." But, I keep checking...sigh.

Oh, a great friend recommended that I start reading the NCLEX study guide. I know, I know...but, he said it's a great way to prepare for how the questions are asked the first semester. Not just memorization, but WHY things are important. It's interesting, but pretty intimidating... I bought an outdated copy cheap on Amazon....since I wouldn't take the test for...er....a few years.

The countdown continues!!!

I've learned that applications are down in alot of nursing programs.
