Hi y'all,

Been wanting to get into Hospice nursing for ages, and finally managed it. Don't want to say anything too early, but just finished my first week in orientation and I am loving it!

I enjoyed Home Health, but like this much better. May have something to do with not having to deal with OASIS forms.:rolleyes: Although I hear they are on the way to hospice as well. :o Oh................please :no:

Doing per diem at the moment, hoping and waiting to work my way into a part time position. Told I'll get plenty of hours for at least the next six months.

But just thought I'd let y'all know that I love my employer, I love my job, I love my co-workers, I love the patients and families I'm meeting,(sounds far too good to be true doesn't it, but it is.....at least so far) and I feel very blessed to be able to care for someone at this stage in their life's journey. I feel truly useful and like I've finally found my niche. I feel like I'm doing nursing in the truest sense of the word. :w00t:

and i hope they give you permanent hrs after your 6 mos are up.

i don't think the oasis forms will be coming anytime soon.

Mary, I'm so tickled for you!!!!! I know the situation you were in earlier this year was untenable---the best day's work you did there was to kick the dust of that place from your feet on your way out the door (even though it wasn't your idea just then).

I, too, have always thought I'd like hospice nursing; however, that doesn't appear to be in the cards, as I've been in my current job for 6 months and I love it more every day, so I'm not going anywhere. But I know you'll be a GREAT hospice nurse, my friend.........CONGRATULATIONS!!! And please, keep us posted as to how you're doing.

Marla, isn't it funny how life goes. I always wanted to be an O.R. nurse, and never managed to be able to do it. But wouldn't want any other area now that I've found Hospice. I'm soo glad you were able to find your present job - after all the gut-wrenching crap you went through at your last job. It sure is a good feeling not to dread going to work, and making yourself sick over it.

I just wish I had more patience with myself. I always expect to know everything within the first month, if not sooner. But I'm soooo excited. Woo Hoo!!!!

I've been in Hospice 8 months, it found me and i totally relate to you... i have never felt so useful!!! I never have a hard time going to work!!! Appreciated your comments, good luck to you!!!

i'm working my first nursing job on an oncology unit. I think I might be interested i working for hospice after I get some experience. Any advice?

i'm working my first nursing job on an oncology unit. I think I might be interested i working for hospice after I get some experience. Any advice?

We were just having that conversation at work today - about how working in Oncology prepares you for hospice, seeing as how many of the patients are dying from cancer.

The only advice I could give you, and what I've heard from all the experienced Hospice nurses, is to let yourself gain experience. When you are out on your own, dealing with who knows what, it definatley helps to have a good solid nursing background to draw from. Experience is one of those things you can't fake.

In the meantime, try to enjoy your work, and learn as much as possible. Good luck!! Every area has much to teach you if you will just open up your mind to its teachings.
