Can a pt receiving dialysis be on the Hospice Medicare Benefit? I know that the primary diagnosis would reflect yes or no. Example: If the pt had breast cancer but also on dialysis, could you put her on HMB for the breast cancer and still have her receive dialysis treatment?

I know that my grandma was receiving hospice after she refused dialysis (kidney failure, CHF), but she didn't have cancer though.

Yes. We currently have a patient on dialysis who is receiving hospice care. He has extensive CA as well. As long as they are dx'd to have less than 6 mos. to live, they can receive hospice care, even if on dialysis. He is also a medicare recipient.

Yes. With the example that you give they sure can. The Hospice benefit is paid on the ca dx. The dialysis is another dx altogether. We recently had a pt for brain ca and they were on home peritoneal dialysis, which they even

To be truly legit, the dialysis should be for kidney failure unrelated to the cancer as well.
