LPN/LVN in homecare and being self employed

Hello folks, I live currently in California and I have several years experience working in an OR as a LVN. Recently due to changing laws I am unable to work in an OR with my current LPN/LVN license. Since work in scarce in my area I was thinking of possibly trying to try companion work/in home care. But instead of going through a business where they would take the majority of the pay I was going to try the self employed routine. I know I need Mal-Practice/Liability Insurance for a self employed person, but does anyone else know what else I might need? Business License? Anyone have any tips?

Some states will issue LPN's a Medicaid provider # so that they can bill for homecare services (but not all). Other states require an NPI # issued my CMS/Medicare and/or an independent practice nurse id# to be eeligible to bill medicaid.

Visit a CPA or tax attorney and learn how a self-employed person computes their own taxes, makes installment payments to the IRS, etc., etc.

There's alot more involved than just earning the money.

That sounds like a great idea! A girl I used to work w/ had a sitter service. She trained the sitters and placed them in different homes. She also worked the 7p-7a shift @ LTC. Keep us posted.

No. You can do LPN to RN and LPN to BSN, etc. A large chunck of your LPN training is skills.

Are there any CNA to LPN programs?

Never heard of it.

LPN programs in new york or new jersey?

I'm sure there is. You would need to check locally.
