Hi,

I am interested in home health care in miami.

I've been an RN for a little over two years, in a pediatric surgical setting, and I want to move to home health because my daughter is starting school soon (she's almost 4).

I've heard a couple of my coworkers start home health, one just totally left and I don't talk to her so i can't ask.

Another one that left that I don't talk to her, but she was recently indicted for medicare fraud....

I am an honest person, and I know I won't do all this shady stuff... but how do I know I am working for a good company?

I would make every effort to find out what company the in trouble nurse went to and stay away from it. You can't assume that she was 100% at fault. There might be a very lax atmosphere at that particular company. You can also look at the forums section of http://www.indeed.com and at http://www.jobvent.com for mentions of Miami offices of hh companies that you identify from the internet or the yellow pages. If you don't find info, you can post questions on those sites to see what kind of responses you get. Most of the time, you have to make certain that you follow all the rules, dot your own i's and cross your own t's, to keep in compliance. When you encounter wrongdoing, report it to management, in writing. What you would normally do to cover yourself on the job.

Thank you so much for the advice!

Florida is a scary place for home health care, with Miami probably the most dangerous area, in terms of bad agencies. Your best defense is a good offense. Learn all you can about Medicare home health. Be sure that you're very familiar with Medicare rules and conditions of participation. Know what homebound means and how to document it. Be aware of the Florida state rules for Medicare home health, also. Learn how to document appropriately and invest in a Marrelli's handbook for home health care.

yep, miami is THE hot spot for health care fraud, it's part of the culture there.

wow,

I figured. I read that in the article from dec. 14, '09 about miami and broward being the place of health care fraud.

So sad.

I'm a little scared of going into it, because I may be an honest person, but the company I work for may not be.

My husband says just to be honest, and never document anything that is untrue and I will be fine..... I hope he's right.

Thank you all for the great advice.

does anyone have any experiences with particular agencies? I know fraud is a big deal here, but thought a lot of that was ghost companies with fake patients less than people actually seeing patients. I know a number of home health nurses and they haven't had any problems yet.
