USAGPAN 2018

I noticed someone had started a thread to rally up nurses applying to the USAGPAN class starting this year so I thought I'd do the same for next year's class! I'll be speaking with a recruiter soon, but I hope to begin the application process very soon! I have about 2 years of critical care experience, just took my GRE and I'm scheduled to take my CCRN next month. I'll be doing that biochem class sometimes before June as well. Anyone else out there applying for next year's Army Nurse Anesthesia Program?

Hi! So a bunch of our class that direct commissioned missed BOLC. So we are doing BOLC after we graduate school. However, BOLC is here at Fort Sam in Texas and is 12 weeks I believe. A few of my friends went to it. There is also another requirement now called DCC and that's at Fort Sill and is 4 weeks if I remember. That is done literally right before BOLC. My class had maybe 1 day between finishing DCC(pre BOLC) and having to be at BOLC. For whatever reason my paperwork took forever. So I didn't even get to my phase 2 interview until oct 31. And had my physical nov 4th. After phase 2 interview they draft a letter either recommending you or not. I think I found out end of November beginnning of Dec that I was accepted. However scrolling takes forever!!! 4-8 weeks I think for most of us.

Thanks for the reply and shedding some light on DCC/pre-BOLC. My healthcare recruiter mentioned Fort Sill but I had no idea what he was talking about... :) Can we choose whether to do the DCC and BOLC prior to starting at USAGPAN or after graduation?

Hi everyone, glad to hear everyone is making some progress on their applications. I've officially been scheduled for my physical at Madigan at JBLM and my interview! Finishing up my biochem, gathering my letters of recommendation, and then I have to write my personal statement.

Just a heads up, not sure if this will be true for everyone, but the phase II director here at Madigan sent me a chapter from an anesthesia textbook about hypertension. He said they would be asking me questions about it to see how well I learn and retain the material. He also told me I would be shadowing most of the three scheduled days and that my interview with him would be on the last day. I'm looking forward to it, and I'll keep you all posted!

Thanks so much for the insight! How have the first few weeks of school been for you? Could you tell us what we may expect initially if we were to be accepted into the program?

Awesome! Every site is different. I had my 3 day interview at Fort Gordon. I was there from 0415 until 1600 the first 2 days. I was with a different srna each day. First day was a senior student and second day was one that had only been at phase 2 for a few months. On day two I had a brief interview and was told to write up a 5 min presentation on succinylcholine that I was going to present at 0600 report the next morning. I then had another short interview day 3 after lunch and then was all done. Great experience. Intense...exhausting!! But awesome to experience everything! I know some of my classmates didn't have any assignments and they had a very relaxed experience. So it will def depend on where you go. The process seems never ending. Keep pushing forward! Good luck!!

Passed cardio consult with flying colors! Submitted my NEU application today. Recruiter is working on Phase II interview. Hope everyone's progress is going well!

Congrats on passing the physical. Good luck in your phase 2 interview. I had mine at Fort Gordon, GA and thoroughly enjoyed ever minute of it. I was very impressed with the culture, mutual respect, courtesy and cooperation amongst all staff. The SRNAs I shadowed worked REALLY, REALLY HARD but had superb skills and knowledge. All the instructors were amazing, very knowledgeable, extremely professional and helpful and seemed to really care about the success of each student. The interview itself was pretty "in-depth" but rather informal... mostly they just wanted to make sure that I realize how challenging this program is and how much commitment is required to make through it.

What is everyone's experience here? And what rank will you be when you enter the program (especially those that are direct accession)? I've been a nurse since 2006 with both ED and ICU experience. I've been told we are eligible for 2 to 1 constructive credit (up to 3 years), and another 6 months for specialty certifications. My recruiter told me I'd come in as a 1LT when my CV was approved, but I'm dual certified with CCRN and CEN, so he's checking to see if they'll count both and qualify me for CPT. What are your recruiters telling you?

Unless you have a masters degree you will not come in as captain. The cap for the credit is 3.5 years. 1 LT is highest you can enter without the masters degree. I had 10 years all ICU with CCRN and TNCC and entered as 1LT. You will be eligible to promote to CPt one year after being on active duty though.

Thank you for that clarification! If you come in with 3.5 years constructive credit, wouldn't you be eligible to promote after 6 months active duty (4 years total for CPT?)?

The requirement to go to captain board is 1 full year of active duty. I am missing the board in March by 1 month :(
