Hello Everyone,

I was notified by my recruiter that the Airforce boards will meet Jan 20- 23, results will be know by Feb 5, 2009. The sign-on bonus is now less. It is 20,000 with loan repayment, and 30,000 without loan repayment, yes it will be taxed.

Thank you for the info. Still decent comparing to the Navy sign-on bonus, which is $10,000 according to its website. Another perk to AF is its shorter retirement requirement, at 20 years.

I think about closer inspection that you will find all branches of the military to have the exact same 'retirement plan'. The time line that you retire form active duty enables you to leave at 20 and go into IRR and receive "retirement pay" based upon your top 3 avg... you can stay for longer duration (as long as you haven't hit the retention control point) and thus build up a higher percentage of monthly retirement pay... but many opt for leaving at 20 years and pursuing another career or not working... some choose to stay longer.

I would also say that the bonus is not that 'big' of a difference especially after you reduce it by 28% and compare your take home amount from the bonus... go for the service you desire - the financial aspect is virtually the same... the only huge contender is how you go in ie loan repayment or direct commission bonus.. that can make an immediate impact for someone with big loans.

Actually its more than last years. Last year the Bonus was 25K p no loan repayment. Now its 30K.

The bonus was probably reduced due to the influx of applicants secondary to our lovely economy. Either way, the military is a great gig and will afford you way more opportunities than most civilian jobs! So, whether it is the bonus, loan repayment, education, travel or sense of family......it is worth every second.

retirement is 20 years for all uniformed services unless they are having a early out which reduces the benefits.

I have applied for the January boards and was just told by my recruiter not to get anxious about hearing anything until February, too! Also, I'll be graduating in May and not eligible for COT until August, so, my packet is not exactly a high priority :/ I'm trying to prepare myself to not hear anything for a while! As for the bonus, those are the same numbers I'd heard originally (back in November), $20k with loan repayment (6 years) and $30k for 4 years. I'm not worried about them changing, I'm worried about them disappearing before my packet comes up!

It's been that rate for the last two years, so it hasn't changed. That's the same thing I got - and I signed letters for that back in May of 2008.

In case you're trying the mental math based on my many other posts, yes, it took me a year to get in - from the time I started my packet to the time I got to COT was well over a year. I submitted my packet in February of last year.
