Job interview @ nursing home today

Specialties Geriatric

I'm a New Grad RN and I have been searching for a job for months now and finally received a call for an interview at a nursing home. Is this a good way to start out or not? I still have my apps out there for New Grad programs as well and I was told that you are still considered a New Grad if you have 6months or less experience. Just looking for any feedback any body has.

TIA

i would grab the opportunity as you are already fortunate enough to get one. i'm an August NCLEX passer but i still haven't gotten ANY interview. i'm currently working as RN on a small facility, but i was only a walk in applicant and got lucky because they needed one. the experience you'll get will be wonderful and it will certainly help on your future applications. i've also been signing up on NG programs and i don't think leaving my current job will be a problem since nursing homes or small facilities don't really any contracts i believe.

just curious to know since when have you been looking for a job?

Good luck!

Your response is what I have been thinking about, lol. I have been looking since March even before I got out of school in May unfortunately I didn't pass the NCLEX the first time due to stress of relocating to a new state and a deployed husband. I retested in Nov after getting my spirit back up and passed and I have been looking ever since. After my interview I will see what they are offering and everything but I highly doubt I will turn it down.

good luck on your interview

My aunt started in a nursing home and loves it there. She's being a nursing for 14yrs. Her other preference is Home HealthCare.

My cousin started in a hospital but did some PRNs in a nursing home, because the hospital she works for would cancel when the census is low. She was not able to cope in the nursing home because of the nurse/pt ratio, but she said she was paid more at the nursing home, due to the per diem employment status. Overall, she said thier are different levels of stress, but would rather work only at the hospital. I guess it all dependents on the individual.

Good luck in your interview!

Okay so I'm back from the interview it went well. I am a little nervous about the stress level so I will let it marinate while I'm waiting for my background check to come back. Thanks for the encouragement.

Good luck! Let us know when they get back to you.

I also just had an interview at a nursing home and I am really excited to hear back from them!

I love LTC, except for the endless documentation.

Good luck!

Gem0607--I have an interview at a long term care facility on Thursday. Any words of advice. What kind of questions did they ask you? Anything you can give me would be a great help. Thanks so much ahead of time. Hope you landed the job!!

They asked me if I had any experience in LTC which I def don't and after I said no I had a bad feeling the rest of the way. I was also asked if I had been applying to other facilities. After I left my spirit just felt real awkward. I've called to follow-up and because they hadn't called me and no one returned my call. I'm guessing it was because they wanted experience. I haven't given up and I'm applying to other positions else where. I hope your interview goes well.

Even if you don't have any experience in LTC you should spin all your experience and skills for how they will benefit you in a position in LTC. Like supervision exp, exp with geriatric in the hospital or wherever, exp dealing with difficult families and/or Doctors, multi-tasking, communication skills, IV and assessment skills, emergency training, organization, etc.

Even if they don't ask, tell them some examples when you had to use these skills to get your job done well.

Good luck!

I have had a couple interviews also and was never contacted with the outcome. I have talked to others who say the same. I have never in my years seen it that way. In the "old days" you would get a letter or at least a phone call saying "we will keep you in mind for future positions". It is not good for the self-esteem.
