Questions on Mechanical Ventilators
Thanks Nurse156, just read this thread you sent....wow...glad you sent this link! How interesting to note that the thread had warnings of keeping an eye on the "settings." I found this very striking, as the RT also warned us about this, and in fact, showed us how the settings can be locked using the control lock key to select a "lock hard or lock easy" to prevent accidental changes to the setting. After reading that thread, I'm kind of worried now, as the warnings is actually coming from nurses and not an RT.... is sure an eye opener:uhoh3: Thanks for such a great info!

What is the best book available on ventilators?
Hi Blackcat, I'm a novice with vents as well. Though, got plenty hands on with trache care already. I found this thread with the help of NURSE156, so thankful for her help! Thought, I mention this--just had a free 6hr vent training class this past friday, and the RT, presented the LTV 950 & LTV 1150 models. On these portable ventilators, there is a "control lock" where you can set it to lock your settings. It gives you the option to choose between lock hard or lock easy, of course lock hard, really locks your settings and prevents it from any accidental change. You may want to check to see if your manual has this function/feature. After reading this thread, I think I will have to make a copy of the manual and bring it with me to my cases, I think it would be devastating to try to troubleshoot without having to find those guidelines in the manual.... I found the manual online. So, I glad I read this thread, really helpful! Good luck with your test! We had to take two tests, right after the training. One given by the RT and the other by the HHA. Interestingly, we all did really well on the test given by the RT, but not so well on the test given by the HHA. I'll be retaking mine later today. I had a 72% need 80% to pass. Didn't think the vent training class helped with answering the questions given. Thought, the training was geared towards what we really need to know for the "job" & just the basics for operating the machine-- nothing much on theory. Though, thought the RT did a good job--but our HHA vent questions are kind of rt/nursing interwined not so much of nursing.... or, should I say they are rt q's....lol...:)

Questions on Mechanical Ventilators
Hi Nurse156, thank you so much! This is very informative, I'm sure it will help me a lot! My vent training only covering the hands on, not so much for the theory, basically "what you need to know for the JOB." But, this link covers so much more than just the basics, the what, why, how,....helps with critical thinking too! Thanks for sharing:)

Questions on Mechanical Ventilators
Thanks for your answers! For the first question, it seems like I chose "oxygentoxicity" and got it wrong. When I did a research using google, it came up with complications like pneumothorax, overdistention, oxygen toxicity, among others listed under barotrauma. Did not get any sense that pneumonia is a complication for high volume or pressure limits. Though, it's confusing to note that one of the complications for mechanical ventilators is pneumonia. So, will it be right to choose pneumonia then? What do you think? I definitely agree with your methods for cleaning a ventilator circuit. I got it wrong, because I chose (wash with soap & water, rinse in distilled water, then soak in disfinecting agent...) I guess when I read the wash with soap, I did think of the "water"....LOL, your choice makes perfect sense! Thanks! This is a Home Health agency, where the nurse provides one-on-one care, so the nurse really gets to do everything, sometimes with the help of a home health aide, when available. But, for the most part you are on your own. From the training, we were told is best to clean the ventilators when the pt is resting comfortably. Like you, I work with adults never taking care of peds/infants... but the test for vent certification covers both adults/peds. I really appreciate your input!

Questions on Mechanical Ventilators
Hello:) I need help with answering the questions for my vent training certification. I'll appreciate any help you can give. Please if you know of any websites that can help a newbie, pls send it my way. I have experience with trache care, but my agency is now signing up more vent patients, they only offered a free 6hr vent training class, given by an experienced RT. The only tutorials received during the training was mainly based on the LTV 950 & LTV 1150 ventilator circuits, because these are the types of ventilators we are likely to encounter in any of the assigned cases. However, these tutorials does not cover the questions given by the agency for certification. Please help, need certification asap:eek: Thanks! Complications of high volume or pressure set in pediatrics or infants on mechanical ventilators are all of the above except 1) Pneumothorax 2) Overdistention 3) Oxygentoxicity 4) Pneumonia What is the mandatory mode for setting pediatrics or infants on mechanical ventilation? 1) Pressure set 2) Tidal Volume 3) SIMV 4) Control What is the best cleaning agent for cleaning ventilator circuits? 1) Soap and water 2) Control III 3) Hydrogen Peroxide 4) Distilled water What is the method for cleaning a ventilator circuit? Arrange the method given below from start to finish. 1) Soak in disinfecting agent for 15-20 mins 2) Air dry in ..... 3) Wash with soap and water 4) Rinse with distilled water 5) After it is dry assemble and put components in a plastic bag What is the function of the exhalation valve/manifold in relation to the ventilator circuit? Need help with these terms: (need terms defined in simple terms) Control modes A/C mode SIMV PEEP FiO2 Breathing effort Inspiratory time

Job interview @ nursing home today
My aunt started in a nursing home and loves it there. She's being a nursing for 14yrs. Her other preference is Home HealthCare. My cousin started in a hospital but did some PRNs in a nursing home, because the hospital she works for would cancel when the census is low. She was not able to cope in the nursing home because of the nurse/pt ratio, but she said she was paid more at the nursing home, due to the per diem employment status. Overall, she said thier are different levels of stress, but would rather work only at the hospital. I guess it all dependents on the individual. Good luck in your interview!

Where can I find Lisa Arends study guides?
i really don't get too much from her guides though. (majority of the students that have used it are happy with it) in my opinion they contain a lot of info that i have already gotten for free. (please note that this may not be true for other students... some students are still struggling to get it together) they contain her notes, that's true, but i see the same general notes all over the net. (general notes is a common thing in nursing because nursing concepts is evidenced based) in addition, it seems like she has a lot of copyrighted material (that i just don't see the copyright holders giving her permission to use, in her material, to make a profit, although i could be wrong, feel free to call me on it if i am). and i just find that funny, b/c she is so adamant almost to the point of threating about her copyright, which she should be, but not if she is using other's without permission. (you are assuming here, which is not fair to the seller) i'm sure you know ebay allows both buyers/sellers alike to set up a user name, but when you purchase items you have to use your real name, which is also true for the seller... i say this because if the seller is selling copyrighted material:nono:.... i'm sure she knows she has a lot at stake because she's a licensed nurse, well, i'm sure she must have learned about copyright/plagiarism while in school--so i don't think is fair to pass any type of judgement. please know that i have absolutely no relationship with the seller. i think she's just trying to help others anyway, in my opinion, if you join the yahoo groups, look through their files, and links, and do some searching on the net of your own, you'll basically get what is equivalent to her info. (is interesting you mentioned yahoo groups... i'm not sure why you are part of such "groups," which i'm a member of as well if you didn't think it was beneficial to you, as you know, in those groups people freely share their experiences/feedbacks, which you can't do in a site like 'allnurses' i'm not sure why you don't have a problem with such groups. and last thing about purchasing anyone's notes, remember that you are getting notes written with someone else's short hard, someone else's writing style, and what someone else thought was important to remember. (what you described here is similar to what you will find with writers/authors of textbks, self help bks, etc) please lets be mindful about how we criticize others, especially when we're not saints ourselves. in colleges & universities alike most... if not all professors understand that students do share their notes and other materials for that simple reason they have a strategy in place, that is--they change the questions, again the ideas may just be the same and this is were critical thinking comes into play. good luck & happy studying!

What to expect on my 1st nursing job interview
Any suggestions on what to expect on my first nursing job interview? I am currently looking at LTC for a start. Will there be written exams--sure won't be as tricky as the nclex, as I would imagine. Anyone knows how the weekend only shift works? Please share any advice on do's and don'ts, as per job interview. What type of questions can I ask? What are the downside in accepting jobs with bonus offers? Thanks in advance for your input:)
