Do you LOVE to 'write people up'? Tips and timesavers!

Reading about all the petty, tyrannical, nasty and miserable LTC types (management or vanilla staff) that 'live' to treat others badly, gave me an idea. It will save you countless hours, give you the thrill you seek (writing people up, constantly!), and also help your staff focus more of their time and attention on providing care, rather than spending time worrying about when or even if they are going to be written up or fired!

It's really very simple- write everyone up. Every day! You can create a simple check off 'write up' form, listing, I dunno, 200 or even 500 offenses for which a nurse or CNA can be 'written up'. The list can contain anything your twisted mind can think up, from the asinine (serious violation of policy, unspecified), to even the actual serious: striking a patient. Other examples I've seen people in here 'written up' for- bad attitude, too happy, calls in when sick, does not call in when sick, makes too many med errors, doesn't make any med errors, the list can be endless. (Here's a good current one: Allowed a patient to use a call light!).

Think about it. You can even have the forms preprinted by date, and run one off with the name of every employee on them. Then ALL you have to do is check a box next to the offense.

Also, at the bottom, you can have boxes to check off, say, 'reported to BON', 'police notified', and other additional actions to help keep your staff in line, walking on eggshells, scared for their job, etc. Delightful, you'll finally feel!! Better than the psych meds that you PROBABLY should be on.

Walk around every day on your rounds (if you're the type that actually makes rounds?), and pass out the 'write up's' to have them signed. What a simple solution to all the time spent wondering WHO to write up next, and WHEN?

Also, for more fun, and to keep your staff even more miserable, and the place more dysfunctional? Terminate somebody once a month or so, at random. The reason? EASY!- you've received too many write ups!?

To clarify how it saves the staff time? They would know a write up is coming, so they wouldn't spend time wondering, like I said before. They could use that time to take care of the patients.

You people know who you are. I just gave you pause to reflect on your evil ways- do yourself a favor, and try to become a human being. What goes around, really does COME around.

*It's so gross to see so many people treated so badly in LTC, it it were not serious, I'd have to laugh.

It makes me want to cry to think that some people have to work so hard and yet fear their job is going to be taken away from them in a blink of an eye, or they have to put up with co workers that do not give them the respect they need to make it through their day alive.

I have seen nasty nurse and DONs, 'destroy' more than a few lives of hardworking, kind-hearted staff that already live lives on the edge, fragile- because it makes them feel better about their miserable selves (those who do the destroying). Please 'like' this post to keep it in the mainstream flow- those nurses and CNAs will thank you!

Oh Suzie, if only this weren't true. It's totally why people shouldn't get all judgmental and negative if a nurse has been fired. So many firings I have seen have had to do with political games and other nonsense. I am not saying there aren't those that are justified; it just hasn't been as much as the firings from political BS--I mean this is what I have seen in 20 years of nursing. Really, you have to chalk it up to political utilitarianism.

It's just so sad to me that so often it's about the same things that the Apprentice is about--screw someone before you think they will screw you. . .or at least someone is so insecure they think someone else is going to screw them or get more props they they will. And then there are those people that just continue to play the power games b/c they get off on it, and b/c they can--at least for a while. Sickos.

As a young nurse, I NEVER would have thought that sabbotage amongst nurses was so prevalent. If you would have asked me, I would have probably said, "Sure. It's exists in real life everywhere." But no way would I have thought that it goes on as much as it does. 20 some years later, I am quite aware that it goes on a lot; but honestly, I still don't fully understand why.

Your humor lends it hand to some realistic truth. The sad part is the patients see and hear more than what is realized. I have seen so much in my years as a nurse too and wished for those days of long ago.

Were things happening about 15 years ago or so, yes, but it was not as much as it is today.

I will believe if we stop trying to be liked and just RESPECTED as members of the nursing arena, things would fair much better.

I can't for the life of me understand why some people seem to like "writing up" others so much. All I can figure is that they must have a really boring and pathetic home life.

LTC can give some people "big fish small pond" syndrome. I worked with one nurse who was constantly on me always looking for things I had done wrong. Once she told me she would do "Bettys" meds, forgot, and then wrote me up as Betty was my rt. The best day was when I came in and found a big narcotic error (no harm to anyone) I was so happy, a little too happy, like maybe I need therapy happy.:wacky: Only time I have ever written anyone up, and enjoyed it!

Sounds like you found the golden egg. Sounds like suzi's met some nasty types. Just read another message from someone who is 'tired of disclipling people. What is going on, am I missing something? Do so many people really need to be put in their places every day? It sounds as if nobody can do their job properly? I don't get it.

It must be said. This doesn't simply happen in LTC. Most of my experience is from critical care hospital, pediatrics critical care, cardiac and cardiac surg. Let me tell you, especially in something like pediatric cardiac, the negative politics can be unreal. It always makes me sad that this crap becomes the culture in places. I mean people do serious damage to people's prospects within an organization the targetted person may like and in fact were productive in--or the culprits may simply hurt the victims's reputation.

If a nurse or even doctor tries to sue these bigger places, well good luck. They have a lot more money and more lawyers than D.C. You watch it unfold, and you think, God, why do you let these people get away with destroying other people's careers--or at least doing serious damage? You hope that the law of reciprocity comes around again. . .not for revenge, but so they get a taste of what they have done so that they never do to others again. Truth is, I don't believe God does ignore it. Sadly, though, some people never learn, and as I always say, people are complicated.

There is one person that I saw hurt a number of undeserving nurses' careers. I am not at liberty to go into details. The person, however, is still there--a career nurse at the prized institution. Does this person every stop and think about what they did to others? Do they consider how they may have handled things differently? Have the put themselves in the shoes of the ones that they hurt? The biggest tragedy to me is if, in fact, they didn't--they didn't grow, mature--if they never swallowed some pride and chose not justify or rationalize their negative part in this--if they never really just got real with themselves. The anvil hangs over that person's head when they can't just get honest about the bad motive and actions. But you wonder if they ever could even consider attempting restitution or a simple, "I am sorry. I shouldn't have handled things the way I did." Wow, what a rare and incredible thing that would be. Imagine the growth, power, and blessings that person would bring to their own life.

My favorite similar situation was a particular CCU RN who always complained about her assignment, no matter if it was the hardest or easiest. One of the charge nurses started to just give her the worst assignment every shift. I asked him about it, and his response was, well at least this way I can feel for her when she complains! I loved it!

*** Oh heck I have been fired from 3 nursing jobs. One of them I actually deserved and should have been fired for (invited a surgical resident to the parking lot for a butt kicking) the others were BS. I brag about it, no problem One thing I have learned is that while being fired IS a big pain in the neck, it's not the end of the world, at least not for me. Having been though the experience several times I don't worry about it much anymore. Just not that big a deal for me. The main thing I worry about is not getting fired, it's having to go through orientation at my next job, Ug.
