Who has taken A&P class that doesn't have a laboratory component?

Hi,

I am retaking Anatomy and Physiology again because I barely passed it in year 1 of nursing school and want to get a better grade + increase my knowledge in this subject before entering my final year of nursing school. I only ended up with a 57% in it but I ended up passing because our passing grade for non nursing classes is only 50% (I am in Canada where we are graded very differently than in the USA for nursing school)

My A+P class does NOT have any type of lab component to it....its the same class as I took before in year 1 - its the A+P course offered by my school as part of the BSCN degree...

Each lecture is 3 hours long once a week....and it lasts for 26 weeks (entire school year)...obviously its compressed in the summer time (2 X a week for 13 weeks but its the same class, same content and exact same textbook).

I am jealous that everyone on allnurses (almost!) seems to have practical labs with their A+P class....all we get are lectures and thats it!!!

Has anyone else just had lecture style A+P classes before? How did you find it help you prepare for nursing? I am so scared of taking this course again....it was so difficult the first time and I almost failed!

My anatomy class had a lab component, and to be honest, I did better in lab (which brought up my overall anatomy grades) than I did the lecture. In lab, while going over the structure of the body, they also covered some of the lecture, which seemed more relevant to me. I am a visual learner, so, trying to comprehend such a complicated lecture really frustrated me. I didn't really understand anatomy that well, to be honest, until after the fact, when purchased a more to the point Anatomy textbook that summarized what I really needed to know.

In the US programs, it is required to have a lab component for the course.

You will not find any classes here that do not have an associate lab component with it.

Actually when I was in nursing school, our anatomy and physiology class DID NOT have a lab component. It was anatomy one semester, and then physiology the next semester- and yes this was lecture only. This was in MA. But now they do have a lab component. I wish they had had a lab when I was in the course- I feel like I could have benefitted actually seeing the different organs and stuff. I did really well in the lectures though. IMO its helpful to have a lab in that type of class.

I will be taking an online A&P course that has a lab component but it is done online. I agree with the previous poster, my lab grade is what saved me the first time I took A&P. There are some interactive websites that may help you learn the material better than if you just use the book.

We had a lab but it might as well have been an all-lecture class. We rarely did anything hands-on and almost NOTHING was worth any points. About 80% of our lab days are pure lecture. Wasn't at all what I thought it was going to be.

I agree that A&P NEEDS to have lab; it's an excellent opportunity to see how it all works and fits together. And, as other posters have mentioned, it was away for me to raise the grade. My labs were awesome.

My A&P courses (2 terms) while getting my LPN, were just lectures. However, my classmates who are hoping to bridge to an ADN program or BSN are finding that they have to take retake A&P with a lab to get accepted in the program.
