MOst colleges will ask their students to take "Placement tests" or standardized exams to ensure that you are up to speed with their expectation even though they have accepted another schools course.

Most schools will offer review courses for free through the college or offer some online resources for study. I suggest to look at the Khan academy for review.

Is that for your school or your nursing program? I had one of those for my school to determine if I needed any remedial courses.

Its for the program.they sent me he acceptance letter, BT when I went over there to register for classes I found out abt these math and English placement exams, and if I don't score high enough, I won't be able to start the program.I have credits in college English and math already, so I don't understand the purpose of these tests. And also, why would u accept a student and then won't let him/ her start the program if the exams(I was never told abt) are failed?

They probably just want to ensure that your skills are still fresh. Like Esme suggested, I would recommend reviewing the material using a resource like the Khan Academy (Google it).

Also, be sure to use the whole words on here- text speak is against the terms of service. :)

I am pretty sure that textspk wouldn't pass muster with the English proficiency exam :)

In answer to your question, students come from many different kinds of programs and educational preparation is not even across the board. Most colleges do have placement exams such as you describe, to get a sense of how the class looks as a whole, and in particular, who will need remedial work. I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts there is some information in your admissions packet about taking these placement exams. Nobody is hiding some great secret from you. That IS when they tell you about it. :)

Surely you aren't saying that 1) you wouldn't have applied to that program if you knew they were going to do that, or 2) your English and math skills are so shaky that you're afraid you won't pass their screen....but you think that wouldn't matter in your nursing classes. Neither one makes sense.

Another important thing to remember about nursing school is that it's not like other programs of study where you take the class, pass the final, sell the books, and be done with it. Now you will be held responsible for having a good working knowledge of every subject you take in nursing school, including the prerequisites, and will build upon them as the semesters go by. Perhaps the school does these screening exams to see who really did that. I don't know.

Go brush up on your basic algebra-- you're gonna need it all through school and beyond in your work as a nurse-- and pull out your English comp text and work on your written skills, too. Word to the wise.

Well, thanks for the answer.all I wanted was just to find out if smb took any of those tests and what they include. If there's any geometry or square roots or stuff like that?or if there's an English composition in the English part.u know

I'm thoroughly confused here, because I took these placement tests before I even enrolled for my pre reqs so that I could be guided by my counselor on what courses I needed BEFORE I could even apply to the nursing program. Then after my placement tests (tested out on English and needed remedial math, naturally!) I took a couple years of pre reqs before being accepted to the RN program. But then once in the RN program the only assessment tests we take are Kaplan and of course, our dosage calculations tests each semester that we need to get a 90 on or we get dismissed from the program.

No idea what smb is, and pleasepleaseplease stop with the textspk. Esme helpfully edited your original post to make it more readable, but don't make her keep doing it. She has enough to do. :)

I am sure that if you call up the nursing admissions office that sent you the letter, they will be able to tell you what's on the placement exam. My advice to bone up on algebra and English stands.

Did you take the TEAS? That covered English and Math placement for me. But I must say, my best bud in school is from Korea and she took summer and fall off before starting in January with me and went home to Korea. It really hurt her this semester. She had horrible trouble with the material from the sole simple fact that her English had slipped. She knew the material but she would mix up many times just because of one English word. She was smart, no doubt, but English held her back all semester. I can see how maybe an English placement test would have avoided that situation in the first place. Math, well if you can't pass the med calc test with 100%, then it would be a waste of a semester. Easier to weed out people who can't do it before the semester starts and allow them to not waste the tuition.
