I cannot for the life of me figure out what med this is...someone please help. I know TKO is To Keep Open

Specializes in MSN, FNP-BC.

5% Dextrose in Water

TKO means To Keep Open as in to keep the vein open so the IV doesn't go bad.

Thank You!

5 % Dextrose ( sugar) in normal saline.

Oh and TKO is not a legit order anymore. Today, we actually have to have an order for an actual RATE, not "TKO".

normal saline is completely wrong. dw or most forms of are dextrose in water.

d5ns is 5% dextrose in normal saline (0.9%)

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

5% d/w is 5% dextrose in water (sterile water).

you will find the common iv fluids and their components listed on this table which you can download and print out. 5% d/w, also written as d5w is listed on it:

Specializes in Med surg, Critical Care, LTC.

%5 Dextrose in water, TKO usually means to "keep vein open" "to keep open" - which is about 1ml/hour. Other posters have said it is %5 dextrose in normal saline, that is not correct, that would be D5NS. This is D5W.

Blessings

this is not accurate or complete information. it may be for the facility you practice in and it probably applies specifically to iv pumps that default to this rate, but not for others where they practice. this question of tko came up recently in the nursing student assistance forum and i supplied the correct answer. please read it for yourselves: https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/tko-iv-question-375962.html#post3491430 - tko iv question

Wow...thank you everyone for your responses...what is the difference between normal saline and sterile water?

Specializes in Adult Oncology.

Normal Saline = 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution

Water = H2O sterile (not tap water)

Specializes in Adult Oncology.

Also:

0.9% normal saline is an isotonic solution. Usually used as a vascular volume expander.

Sterile water is hypotonic by itself, but mixed with 5% Dextrose, it is an isotonic solution, until the dextrose is absorbed. Then the body is left with a hypotonic solution which will move into the interstitial and intercellular spaces. There are risks to long term D5W therapy.
