Hi everyone! What has been your favorite clinical experience in nursing school? I'd have to say mine was seeing a birth or watching a sleeve gastrectomy and gallbladder removal.

I would have to say Maternity & Newborn kicked butt! Assisting with births, giving newborns a bath, caring for women going through difficult pregnancies - it was all amazing,

Yeah it definitely is amazing! I like maternity a lot. :)

Specializes in NICU, Pediatrics.

Maternal/child and pediatrics were probably my two favourites. Also had a good rotation on labour and delivery. I had great experiences, I wasn't surprised by that as I want to work in NICU, I'm definitely a baby nurse at heart :)

Does everyone like maternity? Did any clinicals surprise you all?

Specializes in SNF, LTAC.

My favorite experience was NICU (surprise surprise), being a man who is 6'1 280 pounds with a shaved head and a biker beard nobody thought, including myself, that babies would melt my heart like they did lol!

I think maternity is just hard not to love, it's generally a very happy floor, everyone is excited about the new addition to the family and it makes it a fun place to be. Plus as another poster said the babes will just melt your heart :) as for surprises I was shocked by my dislike for medicine. I did not find it enjoyable at all and I thought I would. And then surprisingly I actually enjoyed surgery which I had been dreading post-medicine rotation thinking it was likely to be similar.

I really liked getting to follow the Wound Care Nurse last week! I got to see stage IV pressure ulcers, MRSA infections, wound vacs, and the metal bar inside someone's leg. It's been one of my favorite experiences so far (and not just the wounds, I liked being able to assist the wound care nurse with helping the residents).

I also liked when my clinical patient told me how nice it was to have me there and gave me a kiss on the check before I left! That was so special to me! :)

I am only a first semester junior but I had a really good experience in my psych rotation. A 23 year old with psychosis NOS was my assigned patient. He had only been there a few days and I tried to talk to him he would stare off and not look at me. It took 20 mins before he said anything I talked to him for an hour and half and got a little info out of him, that he liked to play guitar and what not. Then the music therapist came in and had a guitar it took ten mins to coax him over to the guitar and another 20 before he would play it. And suddenly he burst into song. And was normal for a few minutes. (he was really good too!) It was amazing. The next week he had started meds and was more social and even laughing and joking with us (students). It felt really good to know that the time I spent with him and the attention I gave him helped him in his recovery. This experience was very rewarding and I was blessed to witness such a transformation.

Specializes in Tele/Med Surg/Psych.

I hated labor and delivery lol. I sat around for most of the rotation. I liked mother baby a lot more, but my heart is in pediatrics. I enjoy the patient teaching, and love working with different population types.

I have had several favorites- I am in my final semester. My absolute favorite was the oncology unit. Some others were the ER, the elective surgery unit, and the orthopedic unit.

Specializes in CT surgery, Cardiac, Critical Care.

SICU. I recently had a patient simultaneously on CRRT, Vent, IABP, epicardial pacing, and 16 drips.
