Truly worried about getting in...

I have returned to school after about 11 years. I did really horrible back then, and my overall GPA is right now about 2.6'ish. I have to have a 2.5 to get in. My advisor keeps saying that they look at the current grades, not what I did years ago. Which is great, but my last semester I got a C in Chem and B in A&P, and they look very heavily at the science grades too. Plus, only 40 get in, and last semester about 80+ applied. They start weeding out the applicants in February, and we will find out in March if we got in or not, and I can hardly stand it. My advisor keeps telling me that alot of the applicants aren't finished with the prereq's, which I am taking my VERY last ones right now, so that is working in my favor. AAAHHHH!!!!! I can't stand this, and I just need to let off some steam!

What is so frustrating is that I made the HUGE leap to return to school after having three children, the youngest is 2, and if I don't get in, I don't just want to "sit out" and wait patiently until I do get in somewhere. I can't really apply anywhere else because I would have to retake most of the generals because I had them so long ago, and I would go crazy doing all those again!

oh, I know that feeling, and it isn't fun!!! Try to keep your head up, you've tried really hard and if you've done the best you can then feel good about that!!!

I remember the anxiety of waiting to find out if you got in to the program. Try to keep busy to keep your mind off of it, I know that's easier said than done!

I know how you feel to a degree. When I applied, I only applied to one school (it was my dream to graduate from that school). I was kind of a goof off in HS until my junior year, when I shaped up, grew up a bit, and started taking things seriously.

When I went for my interview, the director told me that they only accepted one out of every four applicants. I figured I was finished. So I was really happy to see that letter saying that I was accepted.

It does sound like you have a few things going for you. You have your pre-req's completed. And they probably will consider that you are serious about this; no one in her right mind would apply to nursing school with little children unless she was very serious and determined to finish. The students in my class that were married/married w/kids did better a lot of times than the single young people right out of HS, because the former were more organized and disciplined...you have to be, to do all that work with small children in the house.

Focus & go for it. Don't worry about not getting in, until you are truly dealing with not getting in. I didn't think I'd get in this semester because they told me the spring semester was full & they were filling up the fall semester....but guess what, I'm got in. So focus on what you need to do & go for it. Grades are not the determining factor to doing well in nursing classes. The "overachievers" (as I prefer to call them...lol) are the ones struggling on the tests while the people with average grades are doing better.

Thanks you guys. I know that grades do not necessarily "make" a nurse, but when the application process is based upon GPA, it really frustrates me! I know I can do this, I just hope they give me the chance to prove it. I will keep you guys posted. Again, thank, it helps hearing from someone who's been there...
