This is part of the reason why Ahhhnold is in office in California!

Nursing Students General Students

Hi all, if any of you wonder why Californians are so wacky and replaced our governer GRAY DAVIS with AHHHHNOLD well this is one of the reasons...Mr. Davis slashed funding to community colleges and now I am suffering for it!

I work full time and so I take my pre-reqs at night. I only need microbiology and then I can apply for the nursing program. Well, they cut down our night Micro classes from two to one, and without any explanation my registration time for the spring was moved from day four to day 9! On day 2 this fall the class filled up...and in the actual class there were about 100 people vying for the "lottery" in case someone dropped the class after it started.

The problem is, the exact thing happened the spring before even when there were 2 classes - about an hour before I registered the class filled up.

So in the meantime my ambition is atrophying because it appears I will have to wait until next fall to get into Micro, IF I can even get in, then the waiting time is 3 semesters (maybe two) for the Nursing Program so at this point I may graduate with my ADN in the middle of 2008! So my friends at that point it will have taken me 7 years to get my two-year degree. I am now running out of classes to take while I file my nails and wait to get into the program.

I knew it would take longer because of my work and I can deal with that, but holy god I didn't think it would take 7 years!! And even if I got into Micro in the spring it only makes it 6 1/2 years, or if I'm lucky and get in early maybe I can cut it down to 6. If I quit my job and take it in the winter I can maybe cut it down to 5 1/2 years if I want to go bankrupt and live in a box. I'm really disenchanted with this. I would love to go to UCLA for my BSN but I simply cannot afford it, and all the other schools in my area or in the same sorry situation thanks to Gray Devil...I mean, Gray Davis.

Thanks for listening, guys. Is there anyone else out there going to Santa Monica College or anywhere else that is in this situation??

What about applying for scholarships and then going for your BSN? I would check with the financial aid officer at UCLA. Sad about the cc system. The General Assembly here in NC has simply neglected ours... Penny wise and pound foolish!!!:( Local people are out of work in droves and banging down the doors trying to get into our ADN nursing programs. We don't have enough funding to retrain these folk. All the while, hospitals in the area are very short on RN's and importing nurses from all over the world.

during the boom 90's tax cuts were enacted

that are costing California

$7.5 billion this year

your new governor plans to float a bond

to fund part of the $24 billion deficit

estimated

plan on further reductions in the CC system......

**sigh**

Yes I realize that too, maureeno, I guess for now Arnold's just the lesser of two evils since Gray Davis already showed his stance on the issue.

For $18 a unit though I guess I can live with it. As I always tell myself...things could be worse.

$18 per unit? I am assuming that units are the same as credit hours. If so, then that's cheap compared with my school and my husband's! I pay $78 a credit hour and my husband pay $156 per credit hour. And this is not at huge nationally know schools, just a local tech school and local university. And that's not even including books. I would kill to oly pay $18 a credit hour.

Maureeno . . . .

I don't think of tax cuts as costing California anything. The money belongs to the taxpayers, not the State of California. They need to cut out the waste before they even think of asking me for more money.

As Russell has said, the government should be forced to run the government like we have to run our homes. Balance the checkbook and don't spend what you don't have and don't waste money on frivilous stuff.

There is so so much waste and that needs to be addressed first.

Well I don't have the answers to any of it but I do hope that Arnold can do you all some good out there, certainly Gray Davis did not :(

Good luck!

cost of CC tuition in Washington

$65.80 per credit [1-10 credits]

$10.85 surcharge per credit [11-18 credits]

full time students looking at about $800/quarter

even the action star governor knows he will not find

$20 billion in 'waste'

that is why he plans to BORROW

and all Californians will pay

I dont' know if someone already said it, but you could see if it's offered online. I took almost all my prereqs that way and I'm in my BSN program now :)

Here's the CA virtual campus

Here's a Micro class I searched on it

Here's a Florida one

Florida Virtual Campus

I'm figuring most states probably have an equivalent virtual campus thingee. Best wishes

I notice that your username is future army nurse... any reason why you are not letting the Army pay for your education? My dh is a recruiter. I know that nurses can get tuition reimbursement when they enlist. You could be going where you want and then they would repay. I'm too old or he would have the army paying for me! He's sure he could even get my age waivered... we've been with the Army for over 27 years... enough for me! Just a thought...

Hi Nurse2BSandy,

Thank you for your reply, actually I am not joining the Army, but I wish to work as a civilian in their hospitals and/or bases.

In my condition I would get kicked out of Army on day 1! I can't even run a quarter of a mile without passing out, haha

Thanks again
