I am really struggling in nursing school this semester. I dread going to school because I really do not know if I want to become a RN anymore.

Plus, I sick of feeling like I am an incompetent fool. And I may have to retake a class so that means I will be in school an extra semester as well. I worked my butt off to pass this class and I am 5 points short of passing. So, I am going to wait until Monday to make my decision.

Doesnt your school offer a nursing counselor to go to in case your are facing academic difficulties? I know mine do and they strongly encourage us to go and talk to one...

I would seriously consider dropping out. You've come this far. Like the last poster said, take advantage of your school's resources. There are times we all feel like incompetent fools! Hang in there!

Krazykev,

If you quit school and decide to do something else, what if that something else becomes difficult? Are you going to quit that too? You have to take serious responsibility for your education because learning Nursing is up to you and it takes alot of motivation, determination and discipline. You have to identify the distractions that keep you from effectively studying. You have to then come up with a plan to get rid of them. Look at the amount of time that you are studying for each class. How are you studying? Are you studying for retention or for memorization? You have to get your test back and see where you went wrong, sit down with your instructor and go over these questions. Maybe there are concepts that you don't understand. Maybe you don't understand the big picture of some things. Don't give up. Look at doing an extra semester as a chance to buckle down and do things the right way. When you get that first bad exam grade, that's when you should be going to your instructor and sitting down with them to see what you did wrong. Don't wait until you're failing. Try some different ways of studying. Draw pictures, maps, flash cards, crossword puzzle makers. When you take notes in class, try to write down whatever examples the instructors says. Then when you go home, re-write your notes and try to picture what is going on with the concept. Picture someone in resp distress or having GI upset due to side effects of a med.

You can do it. Have faith in yourself , buckle down and take it day by day!

I had a nurse tell me to look at nursing school as if you were in boot camp. I found that helpful.

You need to take things a step at a time. falling behind sometimes and feeling you can't keep up with work loads isn't an aspect of being an "incompetent fool"...its called being human. I'm sorry you feel that way, i wonder if someone is making you feel like this or if you're just beating yourself up about things lately? Is it your worry over not wanting to become an RN or your worries over uni work and demands on time thats making you feel like quitting?

You need to let your tutors know exactly how you feel and let them know how desperate you feel about things, i'm sure theres someone you can talk to and things they can put in place. i bet they've got plenty of students coming with the same worries, i've certainly been one of them in the past!

You've come this far...don't go struggling along with this feeling you can't cope though, you certainly can't go through this alone and i'm sure theres plenty of people just waiting to help you through this.

PLEASE do not make this decision lightly. Nursing school is hard, but it's survivable. Really. You've come so far to just chuck it all away. If you decide to leave nursing after graduation, then fine. But please just give it everything you've got now, seek out the help you need, and do it. School doesn't last forever.

Please don't leave nursing school. It is tough but it has an end point. Focus on your goals and ask for help. It's sometimes tough to ask for help as we all think we can do everything on our own, but everyone and I mean everyone, needs help at some time or another. Don't worry about messing up every now and then. If you want to know how to screw something up, ask me. I've done it and done it well and I'm still an RN and have been for many years. Passed boards on first go round and am now working on my MSN/FNP. Ask for the help and I will keep you in my prayers.

UGH....been there done that! I feel for you....

Nursing school is aweful, I wanted to quit before the start of every semester!!!!!

I'm a new grad RN and having my own "issues" w/ nursing at the moment so I'm not the right person to advise anyone on what to do.......But..... what kept me in the game was the fact that I wanted to "at minimum" finish what I started so I didn't have any regrets later. Granted several students along the way said "i'm out, I hate this" and never came back. Only they know if they made the right choice or not.

Hang in there, if you can!

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your words of encouragement; they have made a difference today.

Have you talked to the teacher whos class you are having trouble with? maybe he or she can offer extra credit work or tell you where he or she sees you are lacking? dont just quit cause its hard. its SUPPOSED to be hard. suck it up and get thru it. you can do it. who cares if you are in school for an extra semester. in the long term its a blink. good luck!

My husband will have to be on the road for the rest of his life and I will be a housewife with the baddest kids ever. That is what I thought about last night because I wanted to quit. I don't mind doing those things but I feel that I would not have accomplished anything if I did NOT graduate and did something meaningful. Hang in there. I am ready as we speak to pull out what hair I have left and I am only doing the basic classes. How sad is that?
