The "I HATE IT WHEN..." thread for students!!

Nursing Students General Students

Published

I thought it would be fun to start a thread dedicated to the things we hate that happen to us as students! Let's try not to focus on the annoying classmates we have but rather things like:

I HATE IT WHEN

  • I find out my patient has MRSA after working with him for 4 hours including bathing AND toileting assistance
  • I'm in the middle of a head to toe assessment and I reach for my pen light only to find the battery is dead
  • I'm changing a patient on contact precautions and I get an unbearable itch in my eye!
  • My glasses start to slip off my face while my hands are covered in poop!
  • The automatic blood pressure cuff inflates and the velcro comes apart and pops off the patient's arm lol
  • Some part, usually the thermometer, of the VS machine doesn't work!
  • You tell your patient not to get up and you find him in the bathroom
  • I need to assist a patient quickly and spend 13 seconds trying to put on the gloves because they get stuck in a roll on the back of my hand

I gotta think of some more and I'm sure I'll be adding to this list real soon! :lol2::clown::p:D

I hate it when I have prepared all the patient's 10 medications, only to be met with the patient's comment that if he takes all those pills he is going to "throw-up." "and it will come out the other end too, so get ready for it!"

i hate it when nurses ignore us during our clinicals

yes I get quite annoyed when some RN's dont even acknowledge that you are there. I learn so much better and have such a better clinical experience when My RN is there to help me and guide me thru things and explain WHY. If a certain RN doesnt want to be there to answer questions or be patient with students, then I really dont think they should say yes or offer to help a student because it doesnt help the student learn at all. As students we look to RN's for help and offer information that they have obtained from being in the field. I just know from my experiences that I have learned so much more, and felt so much more comfortable when the RN is welcoming and shows that she is interested and most importantly NICE!

I hate when client's prefer his relative to stay in the room while you do your assessment.

The MRSA thing is the worst. Has happened to me two times already

I hate it when im in nursing class and all the current LPN's and CNA's think they are smarter than everyone else and even try to argue with the instructor who has her PHD really? Stop wasting my time...your here to train to be a registered nurse....why are you arguing about how to give a bed pan?

Don't worry... they'll get there's in the end. Student's like that find out quickly how much they really don't know. Hang in there. :)

How about when you transfer a patient into the shower chair and they immediately urinate? If it feels like a toilet seat, they must be sitting on the toilet, right?

I know it's been a while since anyone posted here, but I thought I'd add something.

I hate it when I am trying to learn during my OB clinical rotation, and the nurse that is assigned to "precept" me only half way listens to my questions, then in the middle of answering my question, turns and jumps into another conversation that she was halfway listening to (instead of fully listening to my question). Then, a minute later, turns back to me and says "What were you saying?". Then, on top of that, even after she states that she will come get me when my patient is about to push, do I have to go into the room to "check in" on my patient and I see my nurse actually helping her push! I did later ask her when she was going to come get me, and she said she was going to get me when she called for the doctor to come (yeah... at that point, the baby is crowning... I wanted to see every step...) Thank goodness I decided to take it upon myself to check on my patient. Nurses like that shouldn't take on students whatsoever! How are we supposed to learn if they don't want to teach us? She was too worried about making sure her car was in the shop, getting the transmission fixed during working hours (literally at the nurses station, right outside the patient's doors) then she was on trying to educate a very interested student!!! This just frustrates the heck out of me!!!!!

I forgot how much I like this thread.

I hate it when you take an online class and they pile on more than three times the work as a face to face class.

Is this just so someone takes the online class seriously? C'mon -- they even have video taped lectures so we have proper contact hours. It is making me insane.

I hate that I just bought new scrubs pants since my last ones had a bit of trouble staying up ( reference most embarrassing thing that happened thread ) and the first day at my internship, I snag them on an open drawer and rip them wide open.

Did i really just put a reference to my response. Uggggh I hate that nursing school infiltrates all aspects of my life ha ha
