TEAS 5 test scores 10 points lower than older version???

I just took my Teas and got an 80% overall. I wasn't happy with it, but the nursing school counselor who talks to everyone after they take it said that was really good because the new TEAS version 5 scores are on average 10 points lower than versions 3 or 4. Has anybody else taken the TEAS 5 or heard that the scores were lower? I think she said it was a lot harder or something so people are scoring lower. She said that it would make the cutoff score lower for entrance to the nursing program at my school since everyone's were lower. I was in the first group at my school to take the new version so they don't have anything concrete to go on.

I called the department yesterday after another group took it ( we were the first group at my school to take the version 5) and she said there wasn't a single score above the 68% range...

Just seeing if anybody else knows anything about it.

Okay, I am officially freaking out. I have taken the teas 3 times now and can't pass this stupid science section. The first two times I scored around a 53% on the version 4.0 but I took the teas V today and got a 43% on that section so yeah apparently you do score ten points lower. How should I approach this in order to get a better score? I don't get what I'm doing wrong. I really want to be able to start in the class in May so I need to focus and pass this test. I think I only need a 56 in that section to pass. Is there anywhere that you can go to just take that section so you don't have to waste your time with the sections that you have already passed. My school that I'm hoping to get into allows you to do that but since I failed the second time I have to wait three months from that date to take it there. They just said that if I found somewhere else to take it sooner that I could do that. I'm just trying to get this done so that I can get the process going and ensure my seat in the May class. If anybody could help that has been through this, I would really appreciate the advice.

I am on the same boat as you but i have a problem with english (grammar)... :(

i did okay on science but other stuff is bringing my score down.. idk how people are making A's on this test.. I study hard just like them

we are probably just not a good test taker :(

I got an 83.3% overall. I scored above an 80 in the science section but failed the grammar section miserably; I think I got a 60 in that section. I used to the ATI review book and would recommend it. Also, utilize the two practice exams they have. I was scoring mid-high 70's on those so I was more than happy to go up on the actual thing. Good luck!

I took the TEAS V last Monday and yeah the English Section killed me. The science section was my highest scoring area, and I ran out of time on the math section. The math section was like an endless sea of word problems. :( And if it wasn't a word problem it some mix number that I had to convert to an improper fraction, so I could divide or add it. Granted, it was all simple math, but when you have to divide a number like xxx,xxx by xx it going to take a while. I so wanted my calculator back.

I should point out there does seem to be more than one version of the test. At least from comparing from what some of the others have said.

As for studying for the science section, most of it is like intro stuff but very detailed. And they seem to really, really favor some sub-subjects over others. There was only one pundit square problem on my test, but there had to be 3 or 4 dealing with DNA and RNA (and one really strange one I had no idea what to do with). The human anatomy focused a lot on the digestive system. The chemistry section was obsessed with bonds and there was even a question that gave you a list of molecules and you had to figure out which one had only single bonds. There was one I recognized as a mitosis question, but it was a part of mitosis the book didn't cover. The only reason I knew it related to mitosis was because I remembered seeing that particular word while reading about mitosis and meiosis of wiki. I just didn't remember what it meant.:crying2: I did get 100% on the human anatomy questions, there were 11 of them, and I went back to the ATI book and check to see if they covered them. They didn't. Thank god for AnP. There weren't many physic questions, but they mostly had to do with kinetic vs potential energy.

This test must be on the hard side for most people since the national average (according to my test) is 63.3%. The national average for the science section is 51.9%.

@mom2three3

do you have an updated version of the study guide? The study guide I used seemed to have the old info and I just took the teas version 5 and didnt do so well, maybe its worth buying a new study guide if its updated?

Hi everyone I'm new to the site. I just took the Teas Five and I failed with a 48 percentile for my average score, I felt dumb when I seen that score, I studied some but not a lot, I have classes that I'm taking now so I could not dedicate my time faithfully, I am going to take it again in june so that gives me a little time to study, they say about four weeks atleast, I really think the science was the hardest, Can anyone tell me other books to by besides the Ati book of the teas five, I already have that one, jus wanted to have more to study by this time

Know: (TEAS V)

Basic cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, excretory and endocrine systems and function (ie flow of blood through heart, vasculature; Boyle's law, gas exchange; digestive function and enzymes (amylase breaks down carbs, most absorption is complete in sm. intestine, etc; function of kidneys, nephrons, Loop of Henle, etc)

- I remember this question: Which organ (liver, spleen, pancreas, kidney) is both an endocrine and exocrine gland?

-immunity

Biological Classification- basic taxonomy (kingdom, phylum, etc)

-how names are used: genus, species

Phenotype, genotype, and Punnett Squares

Nucleic Acids- and DNA transcription

Know cell organelles- plant AND animals and their difference

-cell membranes

Mitosis and Meiosis

Photosynthesis and cellular respiration

Atoms

-types of energy (kinetic, potential)

-types of bonds

Acids, bases, neutral

-know what ranges are acidic, basic, neutral

-know reagents- Biuret's, Benedict's, Iodine, Congo Red

-properties of water

-balancing chemical equations

Scientific method- dependent, independent variables etc

The math section had a lot of percentage to decimal conversion stuff and ratio/proportion problems. Know percent increases and decreases (ie. 85 increased by 40%0. Only 4 questions were truly algebra. Fractions are a large part of the test.

Know your Roman numerals. Know metric conversions.

Take the reading part seriously. Brush up on terms- like types of essays, etc.

I used a TEAS V study book as well as a NLN Pre-Nursing entrance exam book and both were helpful. The material for TEAS seemed quite similar to that of the NLN test. (National League for Nursing)

This is clippy, but hopefully this will help someone out as many other posts here helped me.

Good luck!

PS. I highly recommend this site to help break down anything you don't understand.

It helped me a great deal in Algebra and A&P!

i got a different test. Most of the stuff u mentioned wasn't on my test. Unfortunately i didn't pass, I scored a 70. I was running out of time; I missed about 5 questions on the science, 4 on the reading, and 8 on the math. I'm retaking the exam on July 11.

Any advice !!!

I am taking the exam next week. I have the Teas V book and bough two practice exams from ATI. For me, it is so worth the money to take a test like that and be given immediate feedback along with the rationale behind the question. I took the old teas 4 as a practice test and scored much higher than on this practice test. science was my lowest which is funny as my science grades were all high. i am now going back and using the book for the areas that I scored lowest and using the internet to really back up the learning on those sections. There was so much chemistry that I did not do so well on so I am spending time really focusing on this area. Other areas that I may be weak in but that only had one or two questions, I am just letting those go. I am trying to the most bang for my buck as far as time spent studying. I was also low in the english/spelling section which is funny because I do very well in those classes as well. My papers that I turn in are always scored very high in those areas so I do not feel my score is indicative of my talent. For my school, we need a 62 percent on Teas V. If you took Teas 4, you need 67 percent. On my practice, my overall was above the passing score so I am not as worried as I used to be about taking the test. In a day or so, I will retake the next ati test and see if I have done better. As I took the first one, I took notes on the ones I missed and that helped as well. Read the questions very carefully. I missed a few just because I didn't read the question well enough and thought I new the answer off the top of my head. One question was about smoking and what disease it could cause. I quickly put emphasema but it was cv disease. So read carefully. Good luck!

The above are safe general topics to review based on what is offered in the TEAS V study guide. I could not possibly predict what what be on another person's test. Having studied what the book highlights and passing the test, I agree that these are good general topics to review, and apparently the makers of the study guide do as well. :)

doomsayer,

Thank you for giving so many topics to review. About the Teas version 5, do you remember the name of the essays you have in your reading section?

omg im so nervous about taking this test.. i havnt been to school in a couple years and even the simple math in the study guide i got from keiser is scaring me... Is there any classes or courses i can sign up to ??? someone please help
