taking books to class

Were you told at orientation which books to bring to class the first day? I wasn't, and I'm trying to figure out how many out of the 16 I should take. I'm thinking all I SHOULD really need for day 1 is the fundamentals of nursing book. What's your thoughts?

If your syllabus is as big as mine, just the syllabus.

Specializes in ER then CVICU now.

Me bring one of my nursing books to class? you have got to be kidding me! Those books weigh a ton. All I bring to class is my notebook, powerpoint notes, and a pen that's it. If you're unsure, bring it the first day and see if you'll need it.

Nursing books are not meant to be hauled to lecture.

They are meant to serve as pillows... when you fall asleep on the couch at 3 am after reading your 8th chapter of the night. ;)

Good luck in school (it's really not THAT bad... but close. ;)

I expect the first lecture to be informational only, and will be bringing only a notepad and pencil, and the syllabus.

We were told to bring a notebook and pen the first day and that is it. Nancy

I take my books to class, not all of them, only the one needed for that class....Fundamentals book to Fund. OB book to parent/child etc. I like to follow the book with the lecture, high-light important charts etc. It helps me when I study, but I guess it depends on how your instructor does lecture, one of mine follows the book and points out important stuff during lecture. Without the book you'd get really lost in her class.

I've always been fine with my notebook and syllabus. My med-surg text from last semester was like 700 pages, so that baby stayed home for studying purposes only!!:chuckle

I vote pen, notebook and maybe a binder with pockets. If i had taken my books to class it would have cut my gas mileage about 10mpg. That bag gets heavy enough by the end of the semester carrying those notes around. ;)

My syllabus is huge! And that's all we need. Save your books ( and your back) for reading at home. If you must haul books, get a wheeled backpack. I ended up rupturing a disc and having back surgery the week after finals last year from hauling all those nursing books around on my back. Save your back for lifting patients-you'll have plenty of opportunities for it!

Specializes in Trauma ICU, MICU/SICU.

We were sent our booklist along with our assignment for our first lecture. We were told to bring ALL OUR BOOKS for the first day. I know after the first lecture though they don't require to bring your books (at least at my school they don't). Call your nursing department to be sure.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Pediatrics, Home Health.

Take your sylabus, notebook paper, pencil, pen, a folder and the binder you have your sylabus in.

My Funds. of Nurssing and Med/surg books have 1800 pages EACH!! No way am I carrying those back and forth to school!!

Good luck and deep breath, turn and cough. Oops, sorry got carried away again. :imbar
