Summer before Nursing School

What do you recommend a nursing student to do in the summer to prepare for nursing school in the fall? I have taken my CNA and am contemplating working at a hospital (if any are hiring new CNAs) and continuing that work thoroughout the school year.

Take a good vacation. Because you won't see one for a long time.

If you're really hardcore, brush up on your A&P. But, really, there's not much you can do to prepare for a program- no matter how much knowledge you accumulate over the summer, they're going to bury you in work that you can't do until you actually start the program. Enjoy your free time while you have it.

Like the others said, doesn't really matter. The summer where externships are available is the one that counts.

I'm sleeping as much as possible, and gardening. If you're already accepted, enjoy this time before school. You may find yourself too busy to do much relaxing until school is over.

My answer is the same response that I've given to the other posts -- relax, enjoy yourself, sleep, maybe practice some dosage math. There's not much to study when you don't know any of the material yet. Enjoy your summer!

RELAX while you still can! :) I know, easier said than done, but you have to just trust us on this one. There is really no way to prepare for NS, other than to come with a relaxed, clear mind, ready to work. I think the fact that you got your CNA is preparation enough. If you can get a job set before NS, that will take the stress off so you're not training while in NS. Just make sure they will allow you to have a low # of hours. Good luck! :)

I second the RELAX! Take an awesome vacation. Do what you truly enjoy doing. Do not open those nursing textbooks! Maybe work to save up some money so you don't have to work during the schoolyear.

I would suggest learning some of the abbreviations. That will make life much easier for you. I wouldn't really dive into any nursing material as it's easier when you have class time and direction. Brushing up on A&P is a great idea. How the heart works, etc.
