Study loads for biology?

Hey guys! :)

Well, I went to orientation and got registered for my classes on Thursday. I'm taking 16 credits this semester, which I think I can handle. What I'm wondering is, how much time should I plan on spending studying for biology courses? The advisors told everyone that 2 hours per every hour in class was a good estimate, but I've heard biology takes a lot more than that. I have good reading and study skills. In your experience, how much time should one allow for to make sure that they have enough time to learn the material?

I make questions out of all the things I need to study. When I can answer my own questions (I try to amke them harder than the teacher usually does) I stop studying. I quiz myself the next morning over the material as well to make sure it really stuck rather than just being rote memory. How much for different chapters varries with the difficukty of the chapter and whether or not I had a proper background of the subject.

Good luck!!!!

how to study sometimes depend on how many classes you have since it would be a wise thing to study each day/night for all classes.

re-writing notes, talking it out, flash cards, are just three ways to help out with your studying. remember to not studying for long periods of time (i.e. study 1 hour and break for 15 minutes, etc.). all the best to you!

I would also suggest studing in a group ...

I was lucky enough to find a girl in my A&P I class that had taken the class once before and made a C. She was taking it over again to make an A. Since she already knew most of the material, she would quiz me during lab until I had it down pat. We spent the whole lab studying and I never had to study outside of class (this was summer school so we saw each other every day).

Make good use of what time you have and be willing to seek out others for help. I also find it helpful to tutor others. In order to teach, I have to understand it.

Good luck! And make sure you make time for fun!!!

I just finished my year of general biology. What helped me tremendously was going over my notes immediately after class. I always schedule at least one hour between my classes to allow for review for a test. On non-test days, I would literally re-write my biology notes and go back and review my lecture tapes. Each day I would read over all the notes I had taken so far so that by the time I took the next test (usually every four to five weeks), I was very well prepared. The worst thing you can do is put it off until the last week before the test.

Hi Swiftee,

What works best for me is re-writing (actually typing) my class notes and drawing diagrams from the book. Keep up with the class by studying each day or every couple of days. Don't put it off til the last minute before an exam.

I have taken numerous science classes and it also depends a lot on the teacher. I have had some professors that only teach basic ideas and theories and others who expect you to memorize and understand every little detail of a biological process.

Good Luck!

I would recommend you spend about 2 hours on your bio courses a day. No reason to beat yourself to death with bio when you have other courses..plus you want to give yourself some free time! Don't want to get too stressed out:eek:

How I got thru my bio classes was by keeping up with the chapters...just don't let the lecture get ahead of you and you will be fine! What I did to get thru the course was basically re-wrote the chapter while reading it after that, rather than going back to my book I had my own notes to study and things made much more sense. Good luck to you!;)

oooooooooooooooooops, i meant to say spend about an hour on your bio or whatever feels comfortable to you....sorry....my micro class is really getting to me--it's got me talkin' all crazy:eek:

Another thing that helped me to study was to draw silly pictures for body parts or certain concepts that I could go back to in my mind to help me answer the exam questions. Even today, if a question comes up about a certain disease process, I'll immediately think about the picture I drew for that disease and can tell you the signs and symptoms of it and the treatment...etc... I'm a visual learner if ya can't tell. ;)

Good luck with your studies!!
