Not sure if going to graduate...

I'm suppose to graduate December 22...graduation got postponed due to hurricane Rita went over our area and tore everything up. We were out of school 3 weeks. Anyway...I'm not sure if I going to graduate...took the last test and I'm .94 pt short of what I need to past the class. 1st 3 test were worth 20% each and final was worth 30%, which should equal 67.5 pts...(Don't know where they get the 67.5 from) I have 66.56....then they add our research paper to that score...it's worth 10%.. The teachers are suppose to hand grade my test to make sure there weren't any mistakes by the machine that grades them. Has anyone been in this situation before? I don't know what to expect...I know I failed by the pts...But I have done well in clinicals, projects, skills, etc. and I'm so close...i'm in shock...so don't know if there is really anything I can do about the situation.

This semester has been turmoil from the beginning. We got all the new teachers teaching critical care and they all wanted to go indepth about it. The test were not the greatest written. The class has went to the head of nursing with all the problems we have been experiencing, which has made the new teachers not very happy with our class. I do admit I'm not the A nursing student...I have had to work hard for every pt I made, never missed classes and have went for extra help.

a friend of mine challenged the dept's decision not to let her pass the program. The apeal got all the way to the dean of the school. In this case it ended up that the dean of the school did not do anything and the girl ended up having to retake the class anyway. BUT if you sincerly believe that you did well enough and that you should make it through the program then you should challenge the grade! whatever happens GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the reply...I've never had to do anything like this before. Never had a problem until now. So really don't know what all my options are and who to bring it to. Our program is the most unorganized thing I have ever experienced in my life.. No one wants to take care of anything...always try to pass it off on someone else. So I'm sure this will be an ordeal to try and get something done. Wish me luck!

My program is very unorganized as well! I feel for you! I would check your student handbook for the school as well as your nursing program per the policy on appeals. Also I would approach the chair of the program. Do this ASAP that way you look as though you are very concerned and you have the most amount of time to get it done! Good Luck!

In my program you have to have 73% to pass classes. They made it very clear from day one that 72.99% was NOT passing. It seems harsh, but I guess they have to draw the line somewhere. Good luck to you :)

Hurricanes can really disrupt the momentum. We missed two weeks from Wilma. Coming back, we went right into preparing for finals. It was difficult getting back into the swing when most of us still had no power and some of us lost our roofs. I think that just maybe in view of the natural disaster that befell you guys, a little slack might be in order and perhaps just this one time, there might be some leniency. These were extraordinary circumstances.

I agree, I hope they give a little leeway under the circumstances.

Here's an update on my situation. We have to make 75% in a class to pass that class.

I got the good news yesterday...that I passed. They handgraded all my test and found that I got extra points on my 1st and 3rd test, which gave me the points I needed to pass. Also heard a few students that were borderline of getting a higher grade...got it.

So one stress down, got HESI exit exam to go, then NCLEX.

Just curious do any of your nursing schools require you to take an HESI exam before you can graduate? I'm wondering if this is normal requirements in all nursing schools or just something extra my wonderful school has added. LOL

I'm off for a massage next week...have to do something to get the stress level down...before I take my HESI exit exam next saturday.

Oh yes, the HESI is pretty much standard fare. If not the HESI, then some other brand of exit exam. We have to take three HESI exams: mental health, med surg, and something called the HESI "outcome" that covers material over the course of the entire program. We are required to pass the HESI with a 75%. If we don't pass, we are given an additional shot at the test after remediation. HESI is supposedly an accurate predictor of NCLEX.

we take the HESI but it doesn't affect our grade or passing status.
