Marijuana and Nursing School

Nursing Students General Students

I'm sure there is a thread about this but I wanted to establish one specific to my situation.

I am a 20 year old, second year nursing student in a highly competitive nursing program at a four-year private liberal arts college. I do not live on campus, I still live with each of my parents.

I am sure this question will elicit judgemental comments from all walks of life but let me illuminate you on my character-

I do not drink alcohol or party.

I strictly am attending college to better my future and become qualified, you'll hardly catch me socializing. I am extremely school-oriented and maintain a 3.5 gpa.

I study in my free time and work full time as well as attending school full time.

but YES, on occasion I indulge in smoking marijuana for the calming effects it has on my situational anxiety and sleep issues.

So here is my directive.

Do nursing schools TYPICALLY drug test prior to clinicals and how severe are the consequenceswhen testing positive with marijuana?

How many of you have ever TRIED it? Because I'd like to see the correlation between the tone of each post and who's actually had a personal encounter with the drug. As in - has actually tried it.

I for one have never tried it. Been around people who have done it and did not care for their laid back high most of the time. I have seen some react in a erratic way and become violent. Why did I not try it? Because it is illegal and as a professional I respect the law and rules. I can tell you that I have delt with many many people who do pot. I'm a retired police officer and I see what the casual recreational use does. That money you spend where do you think that goes? It trickles down to the major growers and they are some bad dudes. Here is my point, you have decided to go into a very stressful career and you are going to be responsible for people's lives and wellbeing. Find a proper and legal way of dealing with your anxieties or get another career. Personally I would not want someone who takes an illegal substance caring for my love ones. And before you ask, yes I drink alcohol but responsibly and it's legal. I would have problems with a professional who abused it. Those types do not belong in healthcare.

Sorry but the reality is once you start consciously disregarding laws it becomes a slippery slope.

I grew up and went to college in the seventies...yes I have tried it and smoked it. I like marijuana. Personally, I think it should be legalized, sold, and taxed. At least that would begin to pay down the debt we've gotten into.

However......As a nurse I did not smoke or nor do I smoke it. It is illegal. Period. It's about being a responsible adult and abiding by the law as a nurse. I also do NOT drink and drive...EVER!

Let me guess, you are one of these dinks that assumes that ANYBODY who tries pot will LOVE it and never say a bad word about it. Potheads are SOOO delusional.

How about all of you slow down and think about how your responding to this post. It's insane and completely closed minded.

WE KNOW ITS ILLEGAL. WE KNOW YOU GET DRUG TESTED. OKAY WE GET IT.

Shut up and go study for those tests all of you complain about. Or how about you work on your communication skills. You don't know this person. I'm sure most of you have your own issues.

It makes me sick to think some of you will be nurses. It really does. Learn how to communicate with an open mind. Doesn't mean you have to smoke pot, or like it.

Oh but you are all the same people who freaked out about the fake story of the person suing over their grades.... Yeeeeeeaaaaa

What? Those of us who are against doing something illegal are the problem? Right.

Anytime you call a pothead on their BS they lose it and try to turn it on you.

Oh, see I didn't really know that. I don't know anyone who uses illegal drugs. You cleared it right up! Lol Crazy potheads!

Okay after 15 pages I think the take-home idea is: you can be drug tested at any time during school or at the workplace.
