Leaving my program...

Nursing Students General Students

I just wanted to come on and let everybody know that I am leaving my nursing program. I have decided that nursing is not for me. I love the science and the biology, but hate the patient care. I know that I would get much more satisfaction from choosing something else to do for the rest of my life. Everyone here has been so wonderful and I hate to lose relationships that I have built with some of my classmates, but I feel that by continuing on and making nursing my profession, I would be doing a disservice to myself and my patients. My heart is just not in it, and I realize that now and can't keep ignoring that fact.

Just wanted to let y'all know. I have to tell my instructor tomorrow, and I'm dreading that. I know in my heart that I'm doing the right thing, though. Best of luck to everyone, and God bless every one of you.

Specializes in LTC, ER, ICU,.

when one, such as yourself, has search within their heart and made a sound decision, nothing much left to say but, i wish you the best in what ever and where ever your endeavors lead you.

a student in our last semester decided the same as being a nurse was not for her.

it was sad to see her leave, however, it was what she wanted and well wishes went with her.

you still can come visit with us here at allnurses.

Specializes in Everything except surgery.

aimee How does that saying go?? To thine own self be true! You are doing a very brave thing, by searching yourself, and being honest about your feelings. NO one could ask more of you than that! Nursing isn't for everyone, nor should it be. We all have talents, and abilities that we can use to serve our fellow man. But in serving those we come in contact with, we have to care for ourselves as well. Good luck in whatever you decide to do in the future. I'm sure you will be an asset no matter what it is!

Specializes in critical care; community health; psych.

I'm sure you've given this a lot of thought. There are so many embittered nurses precisely because they stayed in when they would have done better to go into something more to their liking. Will you be staying in the health care field? There are certainly many occupations in the field where you can use that science knowledge that don't have the same demands as nursing. Of course, I know, you've thought of that too.

There really is a big difference between sitting in the classroom learning the science behind medicine than actual nursing. I'll be starting my clinicals in January. Of course I fear that I may find that nursing is not for me, as you have. It could happen to any of us.

I wish you the best of luck Aimee.

You are wise to listen to your inner voice when it is telling you that something is not for you. Too many people don't pay attention to those cues and venture forth anyway, thus ending up in a job that they hate, bitter and dissatisfied. We all know, we've seen it many times. You mentioned you love the science and the biology, so you're certain to discover another job field that is custom made just for you. Wishing you the best of luck in striving for your goals!

I agree with the above posters...you have to do what you feel is right. You definately do not want to end up in a career that you hate! That's not good.

Have you decided on a different path? If you enjoy biology & science, there are many things you can do in those fields.

Good luck! :)

Good for you to follow your heart. Even though books talk about how the teen years are the stormiest, I consider the early twenties the hardest. As long as you treat yourself well physically, emotionally, and spiritually any decision you make will be a good decision.

And remember what the philosopher Nietzsche said, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Good luck & anytime you need support come back and say hi.
