Injections practice?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hi,

my wife is a nursing student and wants to use me to practice injections for some exam. I told her NO WAY! I don't mind the cooking, cleaning, laundry and other stuff but she can't use me as a pin cushion. She needs to practice injections with subcutaneous and intramuscular, which a friend of mine says hurts. She claims it won't hurt that much but she can forget it. Plus she needs to inject it into my stomach! Has she lost her mind?

Anyway is there something else she can pratice on? She says they use pillows at school then during the exam they inject the professor (I take you have to be insane to be nursing profeesor). Can't she practice on herself? How about she uses the dog? Or some sort of dead animal? I'll gladly run over the neighbors cat or a squirrel or something. Or am I being a baby like she says? Can't you kill somebody if you screw it up? Why can't she use the million dollar robo paient they just bought, IStan? I thought that was the whole point of having it.

Anyway thanks. She is doing much better since she took some of your advice (studying in a group has helped a lot), straight A's. But she is really hard worker, so no surprise.

I graduate in May '09, YEAH!! Anyway, we only used mannequins and practiced technique. My first actual stick was on a patient. As long as she knows the technique and correct locations, she'll be fine.

CONGRATS:yeah:I too graduate in May 2009 and I can hardly wait:nurse:

Unless you are going to work in an M.D.'s office or a clinic where more injections are done, you won't get much chance to give injections in the hospital daily exc perhaps Lovenox (SQ) and Insulin (SQ) and perhaps an occasional flu/pneumo shot (IM), or when someone reuests a pain shot be given IM instead of IV (which is only in a blue moon). But you should get enough practice during nursing school in clinics. After that it is practice every time you give an injection as a nurse.

Giving shots--and using such medical paraphenelia--without an M.D.'s order may be practicing medicine and there is the issue of negligence, too.

Specializes in HCA, Physch, WC, Management.

This was just another one of the things I practiced on myself and willing fellow students. Our instructor let us get our hands on some syringes and we practiced on oranges quite a bit. I have a younger brother who is going to school to become an EMT so we practiced on each other. I let him practice on me just for the experience as he won't be doing anything like that until paramedic. It was a great confidence booster and your wife is right in some respects... when done properly, it injections really shouldn't hurt much. But pain is subjective. :)

Well you are correct and no RN in the hospital would give an injection without a physician's order but where I work (on a cardiac unit) injections and IV push are given alot so I think it is just depends on where you are working--we give alot of pain meds and some that are not IV---diuretics such as Lasix, etc :):nurse:

That is sooo funny! LOL!:chuckle

Specializes in Med/Surg, Well-Baby Nursery, NICU.

i used to practice on oranges and apples when i was practing by myself. buy your wife some fruit. in our lab we had those fake arms/cushion things to practice on as well.

She shouldn't be forcing you to do anything you don't want to do.

The most I ever did to my family members was take their blood pressures

and give them hot packs and back rubs.

i liked to practice on fruits. it's just taking a deep breath and visualizing it all out.

When I first started doing IVs in the last semester I was a nervous wreck but once I started doing them alot in this last semester they really are not as bad as I thought originally and I have managed to get pretty good with them so far :)

Specializes in Psych.

My school suggested testing IMs on raw chicken breast. They sent us home with little baggies of supplies to practice with. I'd like to make some garlic water to inject in the chicken. :)
