I'm going to nursing school!!!

First off, congratulations on being accepted to nursing school. I worked full time for a group of surgeons while attending school, but many people cannot put in that many hours. If you are going to work in a hospital ask about whatever position they have that has flexible hours, so you can work full time between semesters, or on holidays, etc. Human Resources, especially the nurse recruiter, will be able to advise you. Our nurse externs (last year students) work 24 hrs. a week, usually. Some work one day/week and others work full time or only one or two days a month. Just depends on their financial situation, I guess. You sound like you are ready to jump in there! Good luck.

congratulations! the next few years will be tough but they will be over before you know it. i know. i graduate in december and it seems just like yesterday that i was just starting nursing school! i have a biology degree and couldn't find a job with my degree, so after working a few medical jobs i decided that i wanted to go into nursing. steady job, great pay and i can go anywhere i want with it. a few words of advice:

1. all expenses for school can be used for tax purposes

2. if you can swing it, try to get a job at a local hospital as a patient care aide. not only does it put a little money in your pocket, the experiences on the job can help with your time management and help you improve your clinical skills. also most places are willing to work around your school schedule. after all, they are hoping that you will come work for them after graduation!

3. tell your family that you won't see them for awhile (just kidding). but if you're married, some responsibilities may have to be juggled to allow you time to study. there's lots of reading and studying involved so also get yourself a good study spot.

4. and lastly, get involved with your school's student nurse's association and the national student nurses association (www.nsna.org) . they have lots of great resources to help you out.

I'm so excited for you, congratulations! I bought a Littman Cardiology III as a gift for myself too. The scope I had last year in my CNA class was so crappy I had a hard time being able to hear anything and I told myself if I got into Nursing school I would reward myself with a good scope! Re work, I'd say only do whatever you have to to stay financially afloat. School will want everything you have to give.

One of the professors at my orientation yesterday told us to get a picture of a nurse cut his or her face out and put our face in place of it so that our families, will remember what we look like.... :rotfl: I've already started looking for a pic of a nurse.

Back in the early spring when hubby & I were grumpy, I blew up a picture of myself on the scanner, printed it and put it on my pillow. As my husband trudged upstairs to bed alone while I stayed up late studying, for the 100th time, I listened ... when I heard him crack up, I knew things would be OK. :)

I bought a Littman Cardiology III as a gift for myself too. The scope I had last year in my CNA class was so crappy I had a hard time being able to hear anything and I told myself if I got into Nursing school I would reward myself with a good scope!

May I ask what that crappy scope was? I got a Littmann lightweight for clinicals, but I'm wondering if I need something a little more top of the line. It's a Littmann, but only around a $35 one. Thanks-
