How do you spell relief?

I realize that I am quoting decades old commercials, but...

I have been so 'down' lately... lots of stress.

I'm a military wife and husband has been traveling (not war related, thank God!), and it's stressful around here handling family (which includes a special needs child) and school. Also my aunt died suddenly about 2 weeks ago and I am far from my mother who could use some company. Many people from our housing area are in the Persian Gulf region and it's tense... Okay, so you get the general idea.

Well, this morning while checking my emails I turned on the TV. All the war stuff was really draining me so I started surfing... and settled on Mystery Science Theater. What a riot! I'm not a usual watcher but that had me laughing so hard my daughter woke up and got out of bed. So Cheezy!

I'm feeling so much better now that I have had some deep breathing from those belly laughs!:roll

I guess it's true what they say... "Laughter is the best medicine!"

Any of you have some good ways for stress relief?

How about any good suggestions for funny movies?

Hey, after a horribly oppressive world lit course last summer I learned the value of reading junk novels. I needed something to read that was light and meaningless. I found out about cooking mysteries! What a hoot... mysteries written from a caterer's perspective... they even have recipes! Who'd ever think of such a genre!

My first 2 semesters I didn't think I had time to read for fun... now it's a relief for me. Put something in that I can enjoy but don't have to remember. I am tutoring in a remedial english class this semester and the students have to be reading... I have gone through 5 novels so far. I need to have something to read in class and once I get started I find myself finishing it and needing a new one. I've just discovered Grishem...

"Retail therapy" is always a good release... until you get the credit card bills!;)

And MST3K rocks! Although the first guy was funnier, the blonde guy is easier on the eyes.

(definitely gonna hafta catch this MST thing--sounds like a blast)

New one out on video was sooooooooo funny: Undercover Brother. It was great fun. Also, if it's still out, How to lose a guy in 10 days. Even my husband was busting up with that one. I love to go bike riding, the wind blowing in my face, ahhhh the stress loosens. I scrapbook for fun too. Oh and a great steamy novel: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. You will get hooked, there are 5 if you want to read all of them, but the first is the best! Heather

I agree, reading something for fun relaxes me better than anything! Besides a good nap of course... :lol2:

also, sometimes a good long run can get my mind off anything and release a LOT of stress!

MST3K is Mystery Science Theatre 3000, There are 3 Robots Crow, Gypsy and Tom Servo, they hang out with this human guy (originally Joel one of the series creators, since replaced by Mike) and the evil element...(Her name escapes me at the time) The premise is they are sent really awful movies that they must watch. So you see the movies and thier outlines in the front of the film as if they were in a theatre. They make wonderfully snarky and hilarious comments throughout the entire film.

My two favorites are "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" (with Raul Julia whom I absolutely adore!)

and the one they ran a few weeks ago, a very dreary german version of Hamlet. poorly lit (I'm guessing the director considered it atmosphere?) And with the world's worst dubbing.....I was snorting coffee out my nose! MST3k runs here on the scifi channel on Sunday mornings at 10am. Inanity at its best....

Oh and the Diana Gabaldon books are the best! Politics, intrigue, healing,(Claire starts out as a nurse.) and lots of romance.....but not the least bit gushy.

enjoy!

Tres

I am so glad there are others here addicted to historical and other romances!!!! I haven't read Diana Gabaldon yet but I've heard of her. Would love to hear other recommendations! Have all the time in the world to read now!

Oh! And I've seen MST3K before channel surfing. It is pretty funny.

You know stress can be fixed easily with a pan of warm brownies and vanilla bean ice cream. Easily, I tell ya! Best when shared with a fellow classmate also near the edge of insanity.

Oh, with Hershey's chocolate syrup all over.mmmmmmmmmmm!!!

I can completely relate to your situation! I too am a military wife (Army) who's husband just returned (Thank God) from a 3 month TDY. Prior to that, he was in Korea for a year. (The Army has a scense of humor - it's just not funny.) While he was gone, I started school (pre-reqs, no clinicals or Nursing classes), got so sick I had to beg my parents to come from San Antonio to help me, and face the fact that my oldest son will probably have to start meds for obsessive/compulsive behaviors - pending his appointment w/the psych.

Anyway, enough about me, spelling relief for me comes in a couple of forms. My good friend and I go out once a week - bingo, movie, etc - I also am lucky enough to be from San Antonio and stationed in San Angelo so I am able to go home once a month or once every other month.

I hope everything works out for you. Write to me via private message or to my e-mail (I think it's in my profile) if you need someone to talk to. Where are you stationed anyway?

Our youngest is on meds for many things... autistic compulsive behaviors, bipolar disorder, hyperactivity, aggression, anxiety... it's not easy, especially when you have to parent alone! You are fortunate to be close enough to parents to get some break... take advantage of it. The army's sense of humor usually means as far from family for assignments as is possible! We went from MI to Hawaii... both places are 2500 miles from our family in CA. Well, the army knows best, I guess!;)

Actually, I have to believe that God is in control or I'd go crazy! I was close enough to crazy when we first got here... but the counseling that I got helped me to realize that I was capable of going to nursing school and getting my degree. So God can use even our 'craziness' to get us where He wants us to be!

this site is a fun way to connect and relieve some stress! Maybe we could spell relief http://www.allnurses.com!
