Jul 11, '04LOL @ Wendy..you are cracking me up!
I am trying to do something that I am at least somewhat interested in right now too, since it is going to take over much of my life for the next month. I just get irritated with the whole WMD thing and I'm not as much into the medical things since I know that I will have to do papers later on them. KWIM? Thanks guys. I think I have my three (actually four) and if he knocks them all down, I'll have to go back to sqaure one!

Jul 11, '04i did a paper on elderly abuse and got good reviews from my professors. there is a lot of information in the library about it and on the net. it is a subject that can also be narrowed down to hit the most important highlights that are known to initiate elderly abuse such as:
1. stressed out caregivers (usually the children) that care for an ailing elderly person are more prone to abuse because they feel overwhelmed and burdened with caring for the person and feel that they don't have a life of their own.
2. children who are substance abusers are more likely to abuse the elderly.
3. no access to health care or limited access to care/resources force the elderly to depend on people that don't really care for them.
4. elderly people that live alone are the biggest target because they are vulnerable to trusting people that may only have a financial interest in helping them.
good luck with your paper.
Jul 11, '04Medication coverage and the elderly. It's amazing how little Medicare is actually helping the poor seniors with their medications.
Noninvasive blood sugar monitoring. There is quite a story about how it started. There was supposed to be "a black box" that would do noninvasive blood sugar monitoring. Many $$ were paid for the development. The people who were the developers took the money and ran. They left exactly what the title was, an empty black box. Quite a scandal. It would be quite interesting to track the development and the slow progress in this area. I know that in 1990 they said they would have noninvasive meters in 5 years. In 1995, they said 5 more years. Guess what they're saying today.... "5 more years!" If you do this paper, I would LOVE to read it! Audrey
Jul 11, '04I'm in the process of writing a research paper for one of my nursing classes right now and I chose Margaret Sanger/the history of the birth control movement (Planned Parenthood and its predecessors). Pretty interesting subject matter, and lots of information available on it. Don't know how close this would be considering you can't do the abortion angle, but it's really a whole other subject in itself - some people may not view it that way, though.
Good luck choosing a topic and writing your paper!
Jul 11, '04It's really hard to find a subject that can be whittled down to five to seven pages. *sigh* I'd almost rather have a larger one!
Jul 11, '04We did an interesting research presentation on HER-2 in breast cancer - lots of info on that. Also the use of unlicensed assistive personnel is also a boatload of available resources. I think the idea for stem cell research would be very interesting.
teens and smoking
use of leeches, maggots for wound debridement
deep brain stimulation to treat Parkinsons, etc
Hope that helps.
Jul 11, '04Quote from CNM2BHey Kim, Your subject can be broad, but you only need to tackle a tiny part of it. It can be tough to narrow down your topic at first. But once you start researching, you can find your own angle (and magically, your thesis!) I found it helpful to start my researching without any inkling of my direction - only a vague notion of questions to ask about my topic. Then as I read, I learned more. As I learned, I formed an opinon and decided on my eventual direction. Follow your instincts. You can do it! And I'll be glad to proof read for ya. :wink2:It's really hard to find a subject that can be whittled down to five to seven pages. *sigh* I'd almost rather have a larger one!
Jul 11, '04Good Steph!!! Hey, ya wannamy essay by Tuesday night if I send it to you tomorrow? I want to tweak it some more!
Jul 11, '04With help from all of you, I decided on my three (actually four) possibilities and hopefully he won't knock them all down:
organ donation, educating the public and concerns as to why people don't donate
freedom of speech-censorship in the media
same sex parenting or same sex marriage (pretty sure he'll knock this one down)
