HELP!!! What to do???

Nursing Students General Students

Hi,

I'm a student currently doing prereqs. and will be able to apply for admission into an ADN program after next semester but I have a huge problem. I am single and I have no kids and right before the semester started I had to quit my full time job because my boss lied to me about the hours I was going to be working and it interfered with school so I left because I am 26 years old and I need to get it in gear. Tired of putting off becoming a RN for this and that. Well I found a part time job and I am still doing that but it's not enough. So 3 weeks ago I got another job (full time) because my part time job wasn't enough. I had been using my credit card some since I left my full time job so that's why I got the new full time job. For the new job I had traing for 2 weeks that really screwed me up and now I am playing catch up. I have a 4.0 and am just sick that this job (if I keep it) will bring my grades down dramatically. I will feel that I have worked so hard for nothing. So I am thinkning about quitting this job and then finding another job between semesters. Until I get into the program I must work full time because I am supporting myself financially. I just don't know what to do because i NEED to pay this stupid credit card off that I have been using since I only had a part time job. I know I could get student loans but since I am only taking 2 classes now and next semester I don't want to get financial aid because the program is 2 years and if I use finacial aid now I won't be able to get it later (it will take me 3 years for a 2 year program) so I can only borrow for 2 years and not 3 right??? Please give advise. Thanks in advance.

Check with fiancial aid. I am in a 2 year program aso and it is going to take me three years also. I am having no trouble with getting fiancial aid, bu they do audit me each semester to make sure that I am still eligible. I would check because more than likely you will be eligable for the entire time you are in school.

Good luck!

Good luck... I think you can juggle a full-time job and - did you say you're taking 2 classes? It just requires a lot of self-discipline and some good time management.

I know there are quite a few of us here that are going to school, working full or part-time and have families/small children as well to tend to....

Why not go talk to your financial aid office about your situation and see if they have any advice to offer you?

Good luck! Persistence pays off!

You should be eligible for GRANTS- specificlly speaking of a Pell grant through the feds.

And take the pinking shears to your credit card.

Check at school. Surely they have a dept. that can help you find part time work. Maybe 2 part time jobs would give you the ability to juggle everything?

I like this advice! (I'm a big Dave Ramsey fan!) :D

I wish I was elible for grants. They said I made too much $$$ last year. That's what sucks..it goes by LAST year's tax return and we all know ALOT of things can happen in a year. I made good $$$ last year but was laid off and this year I am barely getting by. Maybe next year's tax return will make me grant eligible.

How about checking into a Stafford loan? It's not going to pay all your bills but you may be able to get enough to cut back on the working to help out with the stress level. You can get subsidized and unsubsidized money. Stafford loans are not based on need or on your income. Your credit doesn't come into it either. When you get admitted into a nursing program, you may be able to get a hospital sponsored scholarship as well.

As far as how long you can borrow, there's a max on the dollar amount, not the number of years.

Good luck and don't give up!

you need to check with the financial aid office, because there is an addendum you can file if your circumstances have changed since last year. My dad was laid off in January of this year and was going to go back to school and they were going to base his need off of last year's earnings, but he filed this form since his circumstances had changed. Good luck, financial aid can be a pain in the ass, but it sure does help!

I'm getting loans for 4 years for and ADN. I just have to be a half time student, 6 units or more. I would really look into your FA department. Have you applied for scholarships?

Also, try to file a special circumstances form. I'm doing this as we speak, it'll do by this years taxes to see if I'm eligable for some grants. Any free money is good money, even if it's 100.00. Also, don't stress about paying off the card, just stay up with the min. I know it's not the greatest thing, but when your done with school you'll have money to pay it off.

Good luck.

First of all, STOP CHANGING JOBS!! That's what gets you in trouble because everytime you quit one and start another I'm sure there is a period of time when you don't get any money. My mother did this, changed jobs 3 times in 3 months and got herself in a big mess. Try to stay at what you have for a while to help get a consistency in income, and maybe pick up a small part time job to get you back on track and THEN look for another one. Unless you have a job in mind that's going to give you a significant higher pay then the one you have it's not really worth the hassle.

second, I know where I live there doesn't seem to be restrictions like that on how long I can borrow. I took 2 years at a community college and borrowed for each and now I have transferred to a 2yr ASN program and am still capable of borrowing. I believe they put a maximum limit on it. Definitely go talk to financial aid to get some more info.
