The Future of Nursing Question

Hello everyone,

I am just curious to hear the input of how Obama care will impact the field of nursing.

I have read on here so far that many are expecting nursing to turn into a part time job kind of deal and that there will be less CNAS and RNS will be expected to do more tasks not really under their scope.

Sorry if that came off as ignorant just doing more research on this from sources who could potentially know a lot (nurses already in the field).

I have personally read that the nursing profession will grow as far as the nurse practitioner job availability but RNS will do more..

Anywho, please write predictions and facts will be great to back it up :)

I went to a panel on this over the weekend, and the hospital recruiters seem to think the future of nursing is outside the hospital - home care, community care, primary care, and clinic based.

...BTW the Death Panels are a little known addendum to the Obamacare bill. It allows the formation of panels of "experts" who would decide if certain patients should be denied healthcare (or even euthanized) because their care would not be "cost effective" or because they are not a productive member of society.[/quote']

Wrong. This is a complete fabrication that is repeated ad-nauseaum by the far right looking to scare people. This claim has been debunked many times. Read this one from snopes - http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/over75.asp

three healthcare facilities in my area are closing due to decreased reimbursement. This could mean that people have to travel further to get help.

classicdame, are you in Georgia, perchance?

This article cites high unemployment as a reason for low reimbursement rates. The ACA offered states subsidies to expand Medicaid, but Georgia declined.

I live and have lived in rural areas and 30 miles doesn't seem that far to travel to a hospital.

Yes! OP: you may want to reconsider your thesis. The long-term impact of the ACA (and follow-on reforms it may spark) remains to be seen. For my money, the diffusion of care into a broader context is still the big story in nursing trends in recent years. And there is plenty of actual research on this, with hard numbers (versus speculation, anecdotes and things read, "personally" or not).

Looks like somebody is watching too much Fox News

Affordability is connected to mandatory enrollment. Right now only the very sick or very poor. When penalties for not being insured kick in and the younger, healthier and self-paying crowd enrolls unwillingly, premiums should go down.

Actually premiums have nothing to do with ACA. It is the what the private insurance companies charge. Last January, I had to buy school mandated health insurance for myself and my son. I had to pay $300 monthly with $10000 deductable for 2 people with no chronic conditions.

The solution, though it may seem radical is Medicaid for all. Then the private insurers will have to bring their premiums down to remain competitive.

I personally think, there is no connection between employment and health insurance. No employer should be providing health insurance to anyone. Everyone should be buying the best deal in the market. Americans have been health insurance slaves for too long. Folks, think out of the box. There are other ways of doing things. Losing your job should not mean losing health insurance.

Death Panels were a figment of the Michelle Bachman imagination. You are an educated person. Do not believe what the political opponents of the bill are saying. Read it and if you find the 'Death Panel' clause, please copy and paste it here for our benefit. Thanks.

I often wonder how sensible educated folks got the idea that democrats and the government wanted to euthanize grandma. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't put it past Michelle Bachmann or Sarah Palin to have awoken from a dream where a burning bush told them and so they took this to be truth and prophecy, but I have encountered many folks who are conservative, but fiercely smart and believe this drivel.

Of course when you ask where in the bill they read this, they usually said they got it from a commentator, or a blog...... Hmmmm.
